Here's Adrian Finighan and Sue Carpenter. I had no idea that Sue ever appeared on BBC World. I just don't recall her at all. (I must be slipping as a BBC World fanatic......................)

Also, Philip Hayton, Donald MacCormack, Nici Marx and others offer the countdown to the start of BBC World's formal launch back in 1995. That particular era of The World Today was classic and was an excellent digest of World news. Wish it was still here!

Credits of course to the excellent Tv Ark.

Followed by several hours of Mike Embley. And now Mike is back too for an afternoon shift as well. Must still be holiday season.
Mike and Laura Trevellyan (sp) did the Newshour last Friday, IIRC.

BBC World News (the program, not the channel) has been in 16:9 since the move to N9 in 1997 (graphics, titles and all). The problem is broadcasting letterboxed 16:9 in a 4:3 frame tends to put people offside as people think the letterboxing is too extreme, and broadcasting 4:3 cropped (as the channel was completely 4:3) tends to look weird as it's everything is being framed for a wider screen. In comes the BBC's compromise - 14:9. Wide enough not to look silly cropped but without extreme letterboxing.
Now the channel is completely 16:9, they have just moved the place where they are cropping. I'm sure as soon as they can negotiate with their providers they will be able to gradually move over to full 16:9.
Thanks for the help. I understand it a bit better now.

I've always been a wee bit confused about the aspect ratios on BBC World (News).
Am I right in thinking it was filmed in 4:3 but then the output was broadcast in 14:9?
If this is right, or even as a general question, why would you broadcast in 14:9 when you don't have 14:9 televisions?
My last question for the time being is why is it so difficult to change to 16:9? Is it not a case of getting widescreen equipment and altering the graphics to fit the 16:9 safe areas and then selecting output as 16:9?
I'm sure I will be wrong and it will be more complicated than this but any help is appreciated.

Well they haven't totally fixed the Coming Up part of the breakfiller. Sure the music now doesn't cut out for the last 5 seconds, but now (at least on the Asia Pacific stream) the city doesn't change - it just stays on Hong Kong for the entire slide...

Ok so right now I'm again just getting white text on a black screen that reads "Unable to transmit BBC World News at present."
I watch the channel on my 3 mobile phone, so I'm wondering if this is a problem on the Channel, or just on 3 Mobile. Anyone else seeing this?
