Looks like essentially what has happened is that the all the channel's output (promos, weather, breakfiller) has changed to be fully 16:9 internally. This image is then being framed to 14:9 for output, which means full widescreen isn't far away.

why can't they broadcast in 16:9 in Europe now, this 14:9 format is pointless, either broadcast 4:3 or 16:9

You are aware how pathetic it looks in 4:3 though? Id rather see 14:9 than 4:3 if 16:9 isn't possible all around the world yet.

Course I am, but you were happy when breakfillers were 4:3

actually, the breakfillers are improving now.

most writings are now in 16:9, and the only problem is the "live data" (the times on Coming Up, the News, the weather symbols and degrees)

so ads had also been cropped to 14:9 (Ocra, Banco De Oro, Uni. of HK)

Yes because it was made for 4:3... everything fitted in the screen... 4:3 BBC News is more 14:9 friendly than 4:3. does that make sense? I don't think it does!

example from yesterday when they flicked...

on Asia Business Report, why don't they just crop it to 14:9?

because i think they suppose to do that, just like what they are doing on WNT and 0500 World News...

Mike Embley frantically gesticulating to someone off-set this morning, unaware that the camera was still on him. Good old Mike. Nice to see him back.

I've always been a wee bit confused about the aspect ratios on BBC World (News).

Am I right in thinking it was filmed in 4:3 but then the output was broadcast in 14:9?

If this is right, or even as a general question, why would you broadcast in 14:9 when you don't have 14:9 televisions?

My last question for the time being is why is it so difficult to change to 16:9? Is it not a case of getting widescreen equipment and altering the graphics to fit the 16:9 safe areas and then selecting output as 16:9?

I'm sure I will be wrong and it will be more complicated than this but any help is appreciated.

Nisha Pillai seemed to do a very long shift today, before JC took over for the 5pm London WNT.

BBC World News (the program, not the channel) has been in 16:9 since the move to N9 in 1997 (graphics, titles and all). The problem is broadcasting letterboxed 16:9 in a 4:3 frame tends to put people offside as people think the letterboxing is too extreme, and broadcasting 4:3 cropped (as the channel was completely 4:3) tends to look weird as it's everything is being framed for a wider screen. In comes the BBC's compromise - 14:9. Wide enough not to look silly cropped but without extreme letterboxing.

Now the channel is completely 16:9, they have just moved the place where they are cropping. I'm sure as soon as they can negotiate with their providers they will be able to gradually move over to full 16:9.

Or they could do what DW-World did and just switch to 16:9 one day. It would be nice if BBC World started broadcasting in Stereo as well

There's something wrong with you screen there, you must have an old tv which strips out so much overscan.

I've never seen it that bad. What size of 4:3 TV is it? 14" are particular bad for overscaning or having over large cases.
