a good point. why is there not a small hole at the bottom of N6 for a cabling duct instead of them being trailed over the floor.

Because often one has to trace a cable to both ends, because someone's incorrectly labelled it. I've had to do this in the past, and it is a real pain trying to trace a cable when it's been stuck underneath a cabling duct with half a dozen others, with most incorrectly labelled (or with the labels having fallen off).

That said, they could have a little recess in the floor, perhaps a sort-of 'gutter', where the cables could be kept.

You also have both in BBC World News and BBC News a problem with the sports presenter mics and the cables for the laptop on the stand. Why aren't they radio mics instead? And could they not have incorporated the wiring better?

Radio mics most likely would be technically impossible due to the number of radio frequencies that would be used.

Also there is a chance that batteries may go flat in the middle of a live read, compared to a cabled mic where the mic is always working (unless unplugged or switched off on the audio mixer).

Funnily enough, just as you say that, they decide to! Smile

It looks alright but it seems daft having the Newswall area right in the centre of the screen yet having nothing in it. I think the camera should be positioned more to the right to try and make the presenter and the desk in the centre of the shot.

Could they not have a camera positioned either in the right hand pod or in the Newswall area to do a wide shot of the set but at floor level, as was occasionally used for weekend editions of Breakfast when that came from N8.

That's not true. Difficult, but not nearly "impossible". I've worked shows with 28 ways of radios.

But you're quite right about batteries going flat. Always better to go cabled where you can.

Bear in mind that if you use ten frequencies in N8 for mics & talkback, thats 10 frequencies you won't be able to use in the rest of TV Centre. It's not much difficulty using lots of gear together, the problems come with co-ordinating that with other users.

I'm not sure it would look any better either - the set would be strewn with packs & used batteries.

Yes, if anyone wants to hear what a jumble of radio mics sound like, pop up to the Edinburgh Fringe right now - the air is thick with UHF traffic up here!

Indeed, but think of the remote controls and other lightweight devices which you can run for free on a once-used mic-pack battery. Guests could be encouraged to take them home.

Don't think I've had to buy a battery for a decade!

It's an incredibly ugly shot which makes the studio look messy and tacky, and the the camera doesn't match any of the others.

I agree, however I'm glad they are using an aerial shot...

I'm quite sick of the focus just being on the newswall and desk though, its like the other side doesn't even exist!

Wow I was just logging in here to post a comment about the number of problems they seem to be having with the Breakfiller (at least on the Asia Pacific stream it keeps reverting to the 'offline' version)

.... but suddenly the screen has turned black a minute into the TOTH story on Beijing, and as I type this the screen just has white text that says "Unable to show BBC World News at the moment".

Oh it just came back on. Weird.

Minor cock-up at BBC World News a few minutes ago, started with the last few minutes of Sport Today... problems with the ticker, gone blank through WNT-Alagiah.

then at WNT minor cock-up on who will start the programme... gallery may be confused if Alagiah or Hussein in Beijing.
