Have you watched The World Today in the past 2 years? It pretty much turned into an ordinary BBC News bulletin but with the execption of a few closes. There was nothing like the old TWT's in the old BBC World set.
So I think its right that they dropped the name because there was nothing different about it compared to ordinary BBC World News.

With all these new World News Today programmes being launched, I find it all the more curious that they decided to drop The World Today in favour of just BBC World News. When you think about when WNT will now be airing: 1100 GMT, 1300GMT, 1600GMT, 1800GMT, 2100GMT, (2300GMT - World News America), 0200GMT. You've got bulletins that are no more than a few hours apart. And yet between 0200GMT and 1100GMT, only the normal half hour news bulletins. I would have thought at least 0500GMT would have been a pretty reasonable time to stick in a branded hour long broadcast, considering that's what they effectively already have.

I don't disagree with that. What I'm saying is that they made a conscious decision to drop the branding for that hour long block while at the same time they keep introducing more World News Today programmes. Given the quite significant gap between the last WNT at 0200GMT and the next at 1100GMT, I just find it curious they didn't decide to retool the 0500 block as another World News Today as well.

That would probably the best idea, whether it'll happen though I don't know.
They should have made BBC WORLD the documentaries style channel (stick Top Gear and lifestyle programmes back on there) and make BBC WORLD NEWS a separate rolling-news channel, similar to what "CNN" and "CNN Headline News" are like in USA.

maybe they are trying to make BBCW become a 24-hour rolling news channel (as its name BBC World News suggests) and move all the documentaries to another new launching channel or something?

Though it is difficult enough to make money on ONE international news channel- BBC World is still losing money (predicted to be generating by 2010 I believe...)
CNN don't run their Headline and non-Headline networks side-by-side internationally for the same reason - the global news market is different to the domestic market.
Don't forget that BBC Worldwide operate channels like BBC Prime, BBC Food, BBC Kids and other genred channels like People and Arts etc. in different territories, so there are other BBC networks alongside BBC World in many regions.

Are the 0500 news bulletin and WBR still simulcast on the News Channel? If so how do they call it? BBC World News? BBC World News on BBC News? BBC World News from BBC World News? Well, anyway The World Today sounded much better.

Obviously it was a report taken from the BBC!
