I wish they would have more consistency though lately they've been better in that department, especially with David Lucy.
I will add something about their slot:

8am David
9am David and Lucy
10am David and Lucy
11am David and Lucy (but when one of them fills in for Alagiah on WNT at 12 then 11 am slot is single anchored)
13pm Lucy

Mishal rarely does 4 days, I usually see her in first few days of the week and then Lyse.
I also wish Nisha would be on air more often, she used to have a slot between Mishal and Nik but it's been scrapped.

I love me some Nisha. She was on during the Aftershock coverage day in Nik Gowing slot. She did the headline and other stories. The camera zoom in on her then most anchor shots BBCWN uses and it was great. Everytime she appears on air she looks more gorgeous then ever. Smile

Ralitsa from CNNI remains me of Nisha they are both one of the longest serving anchors from both networks and are great at their jobs and they cut through the proper and established procedures from both networks. I feel like they speak directly to the viewer and does an effective job of relating the stories to regular folks then some of the other anchors. Calm, simple with a simile and a thank you after an interview. Nisha will always say thanks for explaining, even to other BBC reporters.

I have never seen her on the weekends and I wish she could do the European Primetime weekend slot. Or they could revamp the Singapore set and create a morning news program for the region.
It seem like BBCWN is gromming Karisha Vaswani for a bigger role in the future. She was the India business Report anchor and the on scene reported for the Mumbai Attacks now she is the Jakarta correspondent. They could use her too and create a consistent schedule across the Asia/PAC feed.

I have to agree with some of the points raised on that forum. For me, in 2009, BBC World is a shadow of its former self. It used to be such a varied and interesting channel and one could easily sit there for ages without becoming bored by the programming. Now, it's wall-to-wall news and once you've seen one hour, there's nothing more to watch. It's sadly just become a clone of BBC News 24/Channel (whatever you want to call it). Sadly, I only discovered BBC World in 2000 and I suspect James can remember a time when BBC World was even better in the 1990s. However, even in just the decade since I started watching it has declined, in my opinion. Of course we'll probably get the usual candidates popping up saying that BBC World has now doubled its audience and is actually making a profit rather than a loss...fine, but I don't think it's at its best in 2009. Sadly, those days are long gone.

I absolutely agree on that. I haven't been watching BBC Wolrd regularly for months now. I tend to stick to AlJazeera: it's not only so much better on a presentation point of view but (you will probably disagree on that) I find its news output quite more informative and complete. And programmes like Inside Story, Inside Iraq, 101 East and Riz Khan are something the BBC just cannot compete with.

^^Same old "statements" from the people who criticized the channel over the years for not "Providing more news and hour long programs". You can say what you what but I will be devils advocate here, the channel has improved vastly and it is even more engaging with different anchors/news/shows/and production wise then what it was from insception. I use to see headlines crash and fall apart, breakfillers refuse to play and cuts into programs. That was the BBC WORLD when I first stated watching in 2004. That is what I saw and that was awful.
From that time to now you cannot say the channel hasn't improve vastly since the current revamp and studio. I can tell you when I get up at 5am ET. I wake up to Lucy and David and they do a great job. There aren't any problems with the studio and news. The news is what people want. It is top notch and What the others does is not comparable to what BBC does. Be it ALJ or CNNI.
Look at the big stories and how they are covered from the financial crisis to the US election can you compare that to AlJ. The numbers don't lie, BBC has been the only channel not to suffer in these economic times. While ALJ barely register in the EMS numbers and CNNI keeps losing viewers eventhough the US elections was on. You would think they will run away with the numbers. These numbers don't include the UK viewers since they don't recieve the channel. while SKY/CNNI includes the UK.

CNN International Performs Badly in Europe
Tuesday, 15 September 2009 14:50

cnn_intl_logoThe European Media and Marketing Survey for 2009 shows heavy losses for CNN International across Europe. The EMS, which samples the top 13% of adults in western Europe, focusing on decision-makers and opinion leaders, shows that since the financial crisis began last summer, the worldwide news network lost some 250,000 daily viewers, or 14%, reducing its total share to 3.8%. The loss was enough to relegate CNN International into third place, ranking behind the UK's Sky News and Euronews.

Viewers at the pan-european channel remained stable at 4.4%, whilst at Sky News, the network saw its daily reach increase by 5% to command 5.5% of total viewers. BBC World News is also catching CNN International, increasing its viewership by 15%, or around 160,000 viewers to a total reach of 3.1%.

Meanwhile, it was a mixed bag for the business networks with Bloomberg losing 8% to 1.7%, whilst Bloomberg's direct competitor in Europe, CNBC increased its figures by 30,000 viewers daily, representing a rise of 7%.

To you bring back the early 2000's would revive the channel to its former glory but that is the past and there wasn't much success back then so now there must be something good happening to the channel that people seems to like and are staying with them. It is more then just shows and who the anchors are, one thing the other channels don't have is longevity and trustworthiness. People trust the BBC to give you the news and ask the right questions and that comes handy in this recession. The other channels can spend on new shows and anchors but that don't seem to bring in the viewers and like most people I go right back to the Beep for News every hour on the hour.

In terms of viewers, is BBC World News larger than CNN? I always thought the BBC was the largest.

Owen Thomas appears to be presenting from the old BBC World studio today. There have been no wide-shots to enable conclusion, only head-ons. But I think it is indeed the old World set.

And a few things going wrong here and there too............

Yeah presentation wise anyway BBC World News was tops, but now they have a nice studio, dedicated soft area and videowall, but if they could combine this with the presentation of yesteryear and they get rid of the poor breakfiller and replace it with something more memorable, it could be even better then yesteryear!

Rob, my favourite era(s) were 1996-1998 and 1999. The channel left the virtual era in 98 and became newsroom based in 99, IIRC. The music was far more imposing at the time (pre-David Lowe) and the presenters were all excellent. Only Nik Gowing, Martine Dennis, Peter Dobbie and Nisha Pillai remain from that era. (Plus Alastair Yates and Mike Embley. Strangely, Mike Embley used to double header alonsgide Gwennan Edwards on BBC World too.....)

Can't recall who composed the 99 era music, but it was awesome.

Rob, thanks for your PM. I tried to reply, but the "send" icon at the bottom of my page appears to be inactive. I am getting no reaction to the "send", hence this rather public message. Sorry everyone.

Let me know if you received my reply, Rob.

Cheers,
James

I agree that the channel has improved a lot since getting the new set/openings/graphics and a new schedule, especially with double anchored bulletins. I still prefer the old 2000-2004 look but this one is second to it. The worst part of BBC was from 2005 - 2008, bad set, bad openings and a lot of technical errors.

Is there any reason why they're in N9 today?

I dunno, but I love it!!! Nice to be back on that set, Seamus. (Although the lighting is shocking and the camera is too close and hence and reminds me of TRHS.......................LOL.)
