Its such a good point, the slot had a regular presenter for years with the odd change every couple of years during 'The World Today' era Martine Dennis and Tanya Beckett then David Eades and Sally Bundock then Lucy Hockings and Sally and finally Jonathan Charles and Sally.
Now it seems not to have a regular presenter with a mixture of Martine and JC but the quality of the output is poor, constant mistakes with sound no real thought about the direction of the programme (and I don't mean editorially) and no real effort is made on the 5am programme to make it seem unique to the UK market, people saying things like 'more next hour' and giving the web address out as bbc.com/news; they practically crash off air every other day and why on earth the directors feel it necessary to separate the presenters rather than make a virtue of the fact that they are dual anchoring I don't know - the constant use of split screen boxes when the presenters are right next to each other shows that no thought has gone into the presentation side of things.
The whole morning slot needs a re-think, bring back 'The World Today' such a great name and install regular presenters at least 4 days a week.

I think it is because of seniority. If he gets a weekday slot then Nisha, Peter, and Alastair should get it first cus they've been there for a long time.
The only person who have gotten a permanent shift quickly is Lucy Hockings and Geeta Guru but I personally prefer Nisha having that Friday slot and Geeta take the weekend European prime time slot. Lucy is great and she is very lively and beautiful. Also one of the few New Zealanders on Intl TV. Her slot is good due to the Aus/NZ prime time.
With all the changes BBC WORLD NEWS have made and they have been great and have stabilize the channels and there are fewer mistakes from David Eades shift onward. Why don't they deal with a fix the Morning Shift 5 to 8 GMT. There are so many mistakes and errors. There is always something going wrong. From shots to sound and constant anchor changes. WHY O WHY.

Ginny you are so right. Get a News Anchor and Business Anchor together.
5:00 GMT News and Biz anchor intro, welcome to The world Today.
.12 comming up World Business Report. BBC WORLD break
.12-15 uk weather/news
.15 World Business Report Starts right after the break on BBC WORLD NEWS.
.26 coming up business story/ later in sports round up........... Break for BBC WN.
.26-.30 Uk Weather/World Weather and commecials
.30 World Headlines and a little batter and tease of what coming up after WBR.
.42 WBR ends and a break for BBC WN.
.42-.45 Breakfast Presenter comes on and talk about whats coming up In 15 minutes with regards to stories, sports, business, entertainment, guest and so on.
.45-.55 light news and features, international sports with the sports anchor and a nice closing with the news and sports anchors together.
do this for the next hour and at 7 GMT, News, business, sports bulletin like they do presently.
That is just how I think they could make it interesting and lively yet doing all they do now without making it seem too hard to put together and maintain. Instead of it been like two half hour programs.

I agree. I don't enjoy the news 5am programme as much as TWT. The current set-up seems a bit disjointed and I never ever understood the concept of having the biz anchor at the intro and then she disappears for thirty minutes before reappearing (OK - I know she pops up for one minute early in the programme too). I agree that two news anchors, supplemented by biz presenter and sports presenter would add some substance to the presentation.
OTOH, it also depends on who is presenting, for example, I could watch Martine Dennis or Alistair Yates for hours on end, but would struggle if Thin Willcox or Jono Charles was there every day.
We all have different tastes, I guess.

I'm watcing World in London at the moment. They really need to get the opening of bulletins tightened up. Where is the establishing wide shot? I know that the tracking camera is still up on the roof of the studio, but it's only used nowadays for wides of the soft set - it would be nice to use it a-la the News 24 era in N8 for the TOTH opening shot...it doesn't need to move, if the noise is a concern - just a static wide would help...

O, I absolutely agree with your comments. You have warmed my heart on a cold day here with your remarks about Martine and especially Alastair Y. I cannot understand why BBCWN do not give Alastair Yates a regular spot during the week. At the moment he only does overnights on Saturday, some Sundays and the odd Monday and he is a class act. J Charles reminds me of my Headmaster at primary school and I was terrified of him.

I agree that Alastair is good... but his style is rather old fashioned. I find his delivery and manner that of a regional presenter in the mid 1980s. As for Martine.. she always looks like she's just woken up. Most of the time, she looks bored. I agree with you that Jonathan is a bit school-masterish. And this is the fundamnetal problem with World's presenters... there's nothing wrong with any of them... all highly competent and watchable journalists.... but it's getting the MIX right of old school and new talent / young blood which maintains the channel's authority but doesn't make it look paternalistic and hectoring. Martine, Alastair, Nick Gowing, Nisha Pilau, Peter Dobbie... they've all been there virtually since the channel opened in the late 80s (?). Styles change and viewers change and have different expectations... I don't think World has grasped that to a sufficient degree.

Another shambles this morning on the European breakfast shift, the two shot of Martine and Juliette on the opening sequence looked ridiculous as Juliette is way taller than Martine; any producer or director with an ounce of knowledge should be able to see that it looked silly and should have asked them to present the opening sequence from the desk.
Then; a horrid mess of mic and T/B cables in the back of Martine's shot at the big screen - messy.
Finally they just about get off air with Martine talking all over the end music and not even getting a chance to say goodbye because she is clearly struggling to get through a poorly written end head.
Come on guys at BBC World sort it out.

Fair comment.

Looks like the quality of BBC World Business Report could suffer with up to 10 posts going according to Media Guardian. Such a shame especially as it would seem that its already produced by a small team.
Quote:
Business will be one of the areas hardest hit, with up to 16 jobs tabled to go, including the editor and two journalists from BBC2's Working Lunch, one senior broadcast journalist and two broadcast journalists from the online team and up to 10 posts on BBC World News's World Business Report.
BBC Breakfast will no longer broadcast live reports from the London Stock Exchange as part of the cost-saving drive.
From the end of this month, business presenter Simon Jack's live reports will be conducted from the BBC Breakfast studio, rather than the trading floor of the LSE, saving money on an ISDN link.
