Of course they have the right idea when it comes to news studio design.

They certainly don't. I find all American news studios disgusting.

I actually like CBS's and NBC's studio design, however before Charlie Gibson left ABC, I found their studio superior t both CBS and NBC before the new look with Dianne Sawyer.

All of the morning show sets over there are superior to ours; a cold box with screens (BBC Breakfast), a bright orange mishmash of pres areas (Daybreak) and a tiny corner of a newsroom (Sunrise).

The national news sets over there have the right idea, separate areas for one on ones, weather (although their 'Weather Center' idea is overrated) sport, travel, light news etc.

Local sets are national grade sets and some are even more superior to national sets, again keeping the multiple pres areas but each set is an independent design, yet O&O's (and stations owned by the same company) have one basic design and/or layout and elements.

They aren't actually that superior - As Charlie Brooker points out in the video above (and the whole Newswipe Series) that just because something looks better doesn't make it better. Our sets are simple and to the point they don't have the space or the money to have massive sets or the need. American News is just ridiculously over the top and the Ridiculous Sets match the Sensationalist Nature of many of there programmes where as our Programmes are not Sensationalist (particularly the BBC) so huge, bright, colourful, over the top sets would not match the content.

I know of no American set like that...GMA may be a tad colourful but other than that they all fit the type of programmes that are in them.

And the fact, is they don't look better. They look old fashioned, over the top and tacky usually. Whilst in comparison ours tend to be stylish and fit for the job at hand.

I've never really got US set or graphic design. Often feels a bit faux, OTT and contrived.

Many local news sets appear very dated, either with heavy wooden desks or fake living room style sets.

I agree with many of the points from people who aren't DanielK; most of the US news programmes I've seen have managed to have wood as part of the design somehow, and I have no idea why - it just looks incredibly dated and seems a bit tacky.

They do love wood don't they? And Times New Roman or equivalents.

Indeed - don't get me started on CBS News Razz

That being said I do like their morning news programme's set!

Putting it in a spoiler means that in Neon the images don't scale down like they would have done otherwise.

This is an interesting discussion but totally off topic here. Best to separate it into a special US sets/studios thread. Wink

I don't own a gun or have an underlying predisposition to violence. Will they still let me in?
