Gosh that's a surprise to learn Talking Movies has been reduced to a short 5-minute segment. Talking Movies traditionally had a 30-minute slot every week and was repeated several times per week like the other BBC World programmes. I guess it was all part of making the channel into a rolling news station like News 24. Years ago there were news bulletins every hour but many more non-news programmes in the back half hours. Some of the programmes were very diverse - I remember watching a science programme on there once and weekends always had long (and frankly quite dull) documentaries. It's a shame they couldn't have kept a balance between news and features. I agree with getting rid of the weekend documentaries, but it would have been nice to keep some of the programmes on culture, art, science, travel etc.

That was probably before the BBC had launched lots of newer themed channels like BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle etc. in many territories? Previously there was often just BBC Prime, which was heavily entertainment based.

Quite a few of the shows that BBC World used to show overlap with these newer factual channels, and I think when BBC World rebranded as BBC World News there was a slight change in focus to be more news and current affairsy?

It seems there is something wrong with BBC WN's main news bulletin ticker, because all it shows for the past few hour is " • • • • • • • " or totally blank.

Yes, those dots appeared behind the "markets" segment of the ticker. No markets on a Weekend, so I guess someone forgot to change something or other.

They've pulled it down twice now and put it back up when it came back to the news ticker. Then pulled it down again when the markets header came along.

Oh yes, CNN's a joke these days. It's always a programme about golf, sailing or World Sport whenever I tune in. It's very rare to stumble upon a news programme nowadays. No wonder BBC World's doing so well - CNN always used to dominate but BBC World is by far the best international news channel now, even if it is pretty much wall-to-wall news.

That's all I want in a news channel: wall-to-wall news. None of this "specialty" Rolex programming; just the news. Last I checked, a news channel meant meant bulletins around the clock.

CNN has to lift its game, because the BBC is rolling them at the moment. Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down for a hit of the headlines and finding some obscure yacht-owner talking about a race only 6 people actually know about. It really baffles me that CNN find this acceptable.

Anyways, kudos to BBC WN. Great channel.

I didn't necessarily mean programmes about yachting like CNN has. Those sorts of programmes certainly do not have a place on a rolling news channel. But I enjoyed BBC World much more when it wasn't just news programmes, Sport Today and WBR pretty much on a loop. Programmes like Asia Today, Talking Movies, Europe Direct, Earth Report and many others that filled the back half hours during the 2000s were really quite enjoyable. Some had interesting features and/or raised current affairs issues that weren't a million miles away from "news". And you were never more than 30 minutes away from a live news bulletin. For me, they had a good balance back then and I certainly watched more of it than I do now. But, I guess a lot of people just want news, news, news so that's what they've got.

To ask have you also seen Europe Direct back then? I rarely seen it back in 2001 when I was searching for some channels.

Yes, I saw Europe Direct about 10 years ago, during the period it was presented by William Horsley.

A great compilation of openings from 2003. Still nothing beats that music.

A great find, ginnyfan! That was my favourite era of BBC World. A few comments:

Nisha Pillai - truly a great presenter on BBC World and is greatly missed.

Nik Gowing - not too bad in that clip, but my main memory of him during this era was his headlines always being too long with the result that he always crashed the thunderclaps.

Adrian Finighan - the best there has ever been on BBC World. And I can remember that exact day of the revolution in Georgia. I remember watching BBC World on that occasion.

There was a regular length Talking Movies last month on the weekend before the Oscars.

I think the full-length Talking Movies is now just occasionally. Haven't seen the full 25-minute show again yet.

According to this page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldnews/programmes/schedules/europe/2013/03/30 there's a 90 minute Talking Movies next Sat into Sunday night at 0030 GMT. Very Happy

The page hasn't factored in the time change correctly - effectively the schedule from 0200 is BST not GMT.

P.S. I see the new BBC One programme "The Editors" is coming to BBC World News next weekend.
And next Sunday, 31st March, there will be the usual comments about BBC World News showing live sport: The Boat Race is live at 1600 BST (not GMT as currently stated on the schedule page)

I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that this is probably the best version of The World Today's opening.
The introduction the mini title card with that snatch of the BBC World sting, that sublime calmer headline bed which worked really well into the titles.

I loved it. That was my favourite version of The World Today bed. Used to hear that in my childhood days. It's very formal and worked well into the titles. Nice touch really.

That BBC World 'sting' used in the mini title card reminds me of the 2000 World idents.
