Well London is still using Greenwich Mean Time until the end of the month so it would look silly to change it when London is still using it.

Actually, I'm talking about GMT with George Alagiah. Very Happy

ISTR that people spotted the twitter symbol is 'the old bird', well if that's the case wouldn't the NC idea of using the @ look much better?

I don't think so, since usage of the Twitter bird is now common on television and online...

And the 'Bird' has to be used now when Twitter is shown anywhere, and that's from Twitter themselves.

Those are guidelines - they're hardly going to ban anyone who contravenes them (especially not someone as big as the BBC).

let alone demand that BBC uses the Bird.

Well baring in mind the news channel didn't even promote presenter/reporter twitter acounts, even if rarely (especially on screen) until this revamp, we should be complaining. Wink

Watching BBC World News, and they have aired a new version of the countdown... with the small box logo and new images (like Spencer Kelly in front of a Gundam statue in Japan, and Stephen Sackur in the Middle East), same end part though.

I was watching at 18.00 cet and I was wondering if the countdown was new, it had new footage like from the red carpet and some other I can't remember now. Also the gallery end shot seemed different and a bit longer.

Nice that they are still introducing new stuff.

Yes. I noticed that as well. And, are the actual countdown numbers now set against a localized "cloudy" backdrop behind the numbers? I recall them being "clean" previously?

After checking paulm's vimeo account... previous version of the countdown has that "outer glow", maybe it's lighter?

I think there must have been a problem then, not sure if it was just the UK or worldwide, but the countdown started at 47 seconds then we got Mike Embley with the countdown music till they switched to a camera pointing at the screens.

It was very awkward. Must have been an issue cutting back to the countdown for some reason.

I'm very sure it only affects UK viewers, because I believe Red Bee handles the countdown playout of BBC WN and not the Gallery...

I'm guessing the automation doesn't have a "back" feature, so when you skip forward you can't go back..

That's true in most automation systems - the old News Channel / News 24 system had a separate channel of automation that only handled automatically playing the countdown every hour, and the mix/cut to it was under the director and/or vision mixer's control (often a manual vision mixer transition with a later invisible automation transition to 'catch up' and cue up the headlines)

This effectively meant that the automation system playing out the countdown never had to be touched by the director, and so was never re-cued, un-cued etc. (Though if you didn't load the 24 hour schedule overnight you ran out of countdowns...) You could manually cut or mix to and from the countdown as often as you liked - it never knew when it was on-air or not on-air.

I suspect that this is handled differently in the new automation system - and there's nobody sat in front of the vision mixer any more (all routine output - other than Newsnight and the Sunday shows in Studio B - is now is cut pretty-much entirely on automation - DTLs, studio interviews, everything)

The new system, Mosart, is incredibly powerful and massively more tailored to news than the previous Columbus system that had been in use for the last 15+ years (and was never really designed for News transmission), but as with all new systems, it takes a while for staff to become experienced with the new systems AND for all the bugs/undocumented features to be ironed out.
