The new WBR theme is growing on me. I think it fits quite nicely within the "stable" of BBC World News sounds. It's now Sport Today which sticks out like a sore thumb in the music department.

Also, as an aside, nice to see JC on the paper review today. What a pro. He seemed to be in full control of the timing too!

I'm sorry James, I still love the old theme. Smile

Question, how long has Click had it's current look? After the WBR oerhaul, Click must now be the oldest theme in BBC News?

I think Click have had that look ever since they dropped the "Online" bit of the programme name. Can't be sure though.

Yes, it's definitely not Click. It had totally different presentation when it launched in 2000. One of the oldest themes still in use must be Dateline London. That's been used since 1997 I think, so it has outlasted WBR.

November 1997 to be precise. Presented by Charles Wheeler.
Credit to Click to have titles that haven't dated too much, given the fast changing industry the programme is about.

Thanks, a516. So was Dateline London a new BBC News 24 programme if it launched in November 1997? I'm sure BBC World relaunched in October 1997, didn't it? I know it probably aired on both channels, but was it News 24's programme? And did the same apply to Europe Direct?

It may have launched a week or so earlier than News 24 - not sure. Think it appeared from the first Sunday in November? On BBC World it replaced Breakfast with Frost, which used to be on Sundays at 1310 GMT. It was always strange to see Breakfast with Frost in the afternoon...

Europe Direct came from News24's studios at 2100 CET from November 1997, replacing BBC World News / World Focus between 2100 and 2200 CET. The news bulletin near the start was separate: if BBC World didn't cut away fast enough, you got a frame of BBC News 24's bulletin! USA Direct (at 0105 CET) started at the same time. I seem to recall the old schedule of World News/World Focus* continued beyond the end of October schedule changes until some point in November when Europe Direct started.

BBC World relaunched on the Sunday of the clock change weekend right at the end of October: like the BBC World Service still does - the clock change was always the trigger for schedule changes and new programmes.

* World Focus: a strand of programming Monday-Friday including The Money Programme, Panorama, Reporters, Window on Europe and other factual/documentary programmes.

Since they made such a who ha about it, have BBC World News even used their virtual reality kit?, all I remember was Mishal Husain using it on the first day.

Isn't that where Newswatch comes from?
