I like the fact the ticker is in sentence case now.

Just had a quick look at BBC World News, and it seems the ticker is in All-Caps sadly...

Awwwww Sad

I think someone did say earlier in the thread that it appeared to go ALL CAPS for breaking news, but that doesn't seem to be the case at the moment. Even with the Presidential inauguration coverage ongoing, it looks like all news on the ticker is in capitals. And it looks odd.

BBC News Channel is hooking up to BBC WN right now for the (Public) Inauguration Ceremony of US President Obama...

They asked for viewers feedback on Global Minds and many wrote that its hard to read newsticker especially on smaller screens. I guess that's why they changed it.

I'm assuming that the Obama Inauguration is being produced by BBC World News, and I was just thinking why is the Splitscreen like that? It's not 4:3 friendly...

But it's been proved that it's easier to read sentence case.

The issue was obviously the size of the text, but instead they use upper-case to make it feel bigger. To do otherwise would require a more fundamental change to the on-screen graphics.

Yep - all caps is trickier to read quickly everything else being equal (as you get more contextual information from mixed case) - but at small typesizes lower case text can be difficult to resolve.

When I was watching Newsday at 1 a.m. I noticed the similarity between the night-time city background in Babita' studio to the background of the ITV News at Ten from January 2008 to November 2009.

So is the ticker in all caps or not? The BBC WN simulcast on BBC Two has the ticker in sentence case. It also shows all bulletins with a proper close, which is lovely, and I hope it continues.

It's been proven in limited studies that sentence case is easier to read - however, considering that minuscule letters are physically smaller than their majuscule counterparts, the viewers are right.

I think using sentence case clashes with the DOG as well, which may not help perceptions.

Hello, I am a BBC World News viewer from Brooklyn and a new poster here. I am a subscriber to Verizon FIOS and currently BBC World News is on Channel 107. Unfortunately, the channel is not available in HD on my system. I understand that BBC World News in HD on Time Warner. However, when ever I see BBC World News broadcasts on BBC America (which is in HD on this system) it is in 4:3 and not in high definition, even with the transition to the new facility. When can I see BBC World News broadcasts in HD on BBC America?
Perhaps write to your cable provider and ask them when they'll be providing it?
I don't know a whole lot about the distribution of the channel these days, but I'll try asking some questions to people in the know.
I'd heard that the controller of BBC America is mad keen on HD (hence the broadcast being tagged as such, despite just being upconverted SD until now), so it's surprising that they've not jumped on the opportunity to do so so far.

I can think of a couple of reasons. Discovery Networks run the playout and distribution for BBC America, so it could be a technical limitation at their end. Also two SD feeds of World News are sent to the US, perhaps the HD feed isn't the feed used for the World News America programme on BBC America.

Also, I want to know how some posters here are able to capture HD broadcasts of BBC World News. Thanks.
With difficulty Smile
I work in BBC Television Centre. We can't watch the whole channel in HD, but do have the studio output available to us.

Red Bee send back World Core in HD to BH. I'm fairly sure there are HD scar migration circuits available, so it should just be a case of asking control room nicely to route it. I'll leave getting the HD feed out of the racks in scar as an exercise for you to solve, as that area of TVC is a bit of a mystery to me Smile
