It has 100% been replaced, its no longer smart glass but a proper permanent projection screen.

They are 75" lcds..

Thanks Generic - can you give some insight into why the smart glass was replaced? I presume they couldn't get the contrast but they must have thought it would be ok as it was built and part of the set quite close to launch by the look of it.

I think it's a shame as I liked the look of the smart glass.

Presumably the same is being done in Studio E?

They were chosen so the cameras could shoot though them, allowing a wider range of shots etc, but as you've correctly guessed, they couldn't get the contrast in them to make them look good on camera.

That seems like a pretty big cock-up by Jago/BDA/whoever's responsible for the sets. Surely they'd be aware of the limitations and requirements of the technology they were using?

My point all along.

Hello, I am a BBC World News viewer from Brooklyn and a new poster here. I am a subscriber to Verizon FIOS and currently BBC World News is on Channel 107. Unfortunately, the channel is not available in HD on my system. I understand that BBC World News in HD on Time Warner. However, when ever I see BBC World News broadcasts on BBC America (which is in HD on this system) it is in 4:3 and not in high definition, even with the transition to the new facility. When can I see BBC World News broadcasts in HD on BBC America? Also, I want to know how some posters here are able to capture HD broadcasts of BBC World News. Thanks.

The HD captures of BBC World News broadcasts came from a BBC insider who works at New Broadcasting House, where BBC World News has just moved, as the output is still HD, even if it isn't being broadcast as such.

Is it just me who finds the new 'data streams' in the countdown a bit sinister? The cat's cradle starting to attach itself to passers-by and cars looks like something out of an alien invasion movie.

I saw it from the other point of view, to me it looked like those people both contributing to and consuming the stories.

It's a reflection of how we are more interconnected through mobile technology then we were when the streams were first thought up in 2004.

Perhaps write to your cable provider and ask them when they'll be providing it?
I don't know a whole lot about the distribution of the channel these days, but I'll try asking some questions to people in the know.
I'd heard that the controller of BBC America is mad keen on HD (hence the broadcast being tagged as such, despite just being upconverted SD until now), so it's surprising that they've not jumped on the opportunity to do so so far.

Also, I want to know how some posters here are able to capture HD broadcasts of BBC World News. Thanks.
With difficulty Smile
I work in BBC Television Centre. We can't watch the whole channel in HD, but do have the studio output available to us.

We can just be grateful that any insider is willing to share clips, and information with us. I would imagine having access to studio output is so other news programmes such as Daily Politics, or regional and National news bulletin teams are able to include interviews or segments without having to request such footage later. A sort of DIY VT request process Smile

Just had a quick look at BBC World News, and it seems the ticker is in All-Caps sadly... It makes everything look even more bland than it did.

Has World News gone HD on 19.2 or 13E yet?

Curiously, when I last looked at it just three hours ago, the ticker was in sentence case. I wonder why it's now changed to all-upper case.

It's also now got the curious quirk from the previous graphics set of keeping URLs and Twitter handles in lower case:

FOR THE LATEST, FOLLOW US ON TWITTER VIA @bbcworld --- VISIT THE BBC NEWS WEBSITE AT bbc.com/news

etc.

Very silly. I much preferred it all in sentence case, personally.

I also think the upper-left LIVE bug switches far too frequently between location and local time; when it's switching and resizing so often between the two, it's very distracting - and frankly, there's no real need to be reminded of the local time every five seconds.

Maybe they did the ticker in a rush, and copied NC? Confused
But I very much prefer sentence case.
