Ireland surely must be because of the Good Friday agreement for the NC?

If both channels are not simultaneously available in any particular market, how can there be any confusion?

There is some confusion, as was remarked earlier, when there is simulcasting.

Who is confused though? And where have they vented this confusion? As far as I'm aware, BBC news is one of the most widely respected and recognised news brands in the world.

Or are you concerned that there are times when reporters sometimes refer on air to "BBC World News" when it's on domestic services and sometimes just call it BBC news? That was actually a deliberate aim of renaming the domestic channel from News 24 some years ago. Programmes that refer to themselves as "BBC World News" are designed as such, so that the uk audience knows they're being simulcast. Programmes that don't make such a big deal about being incidentally internationally available refer to themselves as BBC News.

Not so much confusion, it just looks a bit messy jumping between the brands. Newsday in particular always feels like we're eavesdropping on something we're not meant to see since its relaunch. If they used BBC News for everything it would stick out less.

If there is going to be any name changes i would much rather it be...
'BBC World News' and 'BBC World News (UK Edition)'

BBC World News currently airs 21 hours of Live programming each weekday. (The rest being recorded)

'BBC News CHANNEL', only airs 8hr15 of exclusive Live programming each weekday. It simulcasts 5 hours of live programming from BBC World News and 8hr30 of content from other domestic BBC channels. (The rest being recorded)

How is the license fee payer getting their moneys worth when half of the UK content on 'The Channel' is airing elswhere in the UK?

Replace ALL of the UK Simulcasts with BBC World News Simulcasts. Rejig the schedule so those 8hrs15 of exclusive live programming are spread out a bit better over the day, and perhaps try and squeeze a few extra 30 minute back half hour UK only bulletins out of the schedule. UK viewers dont lose anything, because those removed programmes are available on BBC One or Two, and 'The Channel' gains an additional 8hr30 of content that was previously unavailable to UK viewers. At this point, it makes sense to call it BBC World News (UK Edition) as most of the programming will be from world.

Also i think that programmes that are editorially more Internationally focused should be delineated from those that are domestically focused. Not because there is any confusion, it just makes sense to tell the audience what to expect from the bulletin. I think its false advertising that the overnights are branded as 'BBC News' domestically when they are actually bog-standard 'BBC World News' bulletins that only feature quick snippets of domestic news during the breaks.

BBC World News (UK Edition) is such a snappy title ... Smile

Overnight, there really isn't much call for a rolling news service for the uk. It's a small domestic audience. It is however a useful service for the BBC to be providing and if it comes as a bi-product of having an international news channel which does have a big audience at that time of day then that's very good use of resources, no?

Newsday is the breakfast programme for a very sizeable audience and an important market for BBC World News. It also happens to be late night/early morning in the uk, so it's right that it's branded World News. The other overnight bulletins are sold intentionally (primarily to PBS) where the channel BBC World News isn't necessarily well known, but the brand "BBC News" is.

Complicated it is, I agree. Confusing? Not terribly. The core brand of BBC News is consistent, the inclusion of the word "World" at particular times is clearly upsetting a few people on this forum, but I'm not sure it's confusing for the bulk of the audience.

I really don't think it's a big an issue as some people here think it is. Yes there are a couple of times where the branding needs tidying up but having BBC World News programmes on BBC News is telling you it's news from an international perspective, and I doubt there are many viewers that care about the branding. A more important issue is the balance between live exclusive and simulcast or recorded content in daytime on BBC News.

Both these things have been discussed to death on these forums and I doubt we are ever going to come to agreement on the former with some members, but I feel we are all pretty much in agreement on the second issue.

To be honest, if the channel was launched today exactly as it is, no one would have a problem with it. It's hardly confusing, it's just a bit more complex than it used to be.

To be honest, it doesn't really bother me the inconsistent use of BBC News on BBC World News just so long as the BBC News department hasn't p*ssed away tens of thousands of pounds on a branding company to come up with a set of guidelines because if they did it was an enormous waste of money. Though this isn't just a News department problem - unlike ITV and C4 the BBC in general has a TVF-wide reputation of not following the guidelines it paid for. But as has been said most viewers couldn't give a toss and branding isn't the main issue with the News Channel at the moment - that's the fact that they have to cut back and have given that role to a bunch of imbeciles ( noun. an executive or managerial level employee of the BBC) who thinks the audience of a rolling news channel would benefit better from an expensive pile of human interest crap than rolling news.

Since yesterday, the countdown had some changes.

I mentioned it early but the PBS simulcast finally went with the HD countdowns and they've been changing daily. Thursday's was the one where the presenter was walking off back of an air force plane.
