Kay Burley?! ...the only thing she is better at showing is contempt.
Stedixon, DTV and Ant gave kudos

In that case we can replace the readers with robots.

I don't watch the news to see someone make an emotional, heartfelt and fluffy performance. I watch it because I want to know what's going on in the world, regardless of how ugly, horrifying and devastating the things are that have happened.

It's a sign of a good newsreader when they can keep their personal emotions and feelings about the subject under wraps while telling the public.

I think what most of the BBC News presenters lack is the John Suchet effect. Suchet was professional through and through but he had a warmth about him that came across very well on screen. It didn't feel as though he was reading the autocue half the time - but he wasn't overly emotional either. He had a warm personality combined with professional delivery. In contrast to Trevor McDonald who had no personality at all but could read a script competently. I think that's where some of the BBC newsreaders fall down too.

In fact, in addition to my last post - other ex-ITN newscasters that had a similar style to John Suchet were Leonard Parkin and Alastair Burnet. Both were thoroughly professional but had a personality too.

Although, I'd argue, Trevor McDonald was in a class of his own, a brilliant class, but not the same as the very cold BBC newsreaders.

I'll be honest, aside from being authorative I didn't rate Trevor. He was wooden, and relied on autocue. Used to cringe when the autocue went down.

I quite agree, I thought John Suchet was excellent at giving the news a human feeling, rather than reading the news coldly.

If anything, the news needs to feel human to people, otherwise it feels distant, and not relevant.

Back to BBC World: Zeinab Badawi presented a new debate strand from Ukraine this morning. Called Global Voices, or something along those lines.

The programme was broadcast from a prolific building in the centre of the capital. Five panelists, plus Zeinab, all lined up along an elevated stage.

If anyone also managed to see it, what did you think of those unusual stools everyone was perched on? From a distance, they seemed to have an acrylic effect and the guest looked to be almost perched vertical. Very odd.

On the other hand, good to see Zeinab on the channel again.

I always liked Trevor McDonald. I wonder how much of his perceived wooden style of speaking is down to his accent?
