Galleries A (virtual), B (flagship programmes), C (World), D (London) & E (domestic). Galleries A, C and E are in the newsroom and can be seen in the background of shots from studio E. I believe there was a desire for any gallery to be able to run any studio but cost prohibited it.

I honestly would be shocked if each studio did not have a gallery.

Since this thread sort of covers New Broadcasting House I am curious if some of the radio studios have those PTZ cameras in them? Here in the US many radio stations have those little HD cameras which are used to broadcast video to the web. The systems they use require minimum effort on the producers part and more often than not the system will either switch the shot automatically to zoom in on the seat where the person is speaking.

I think people were confused over whether there was a gallery-per-studio (which there is), or a gallery-per-service (World / News Channel / Nationals / Newsnight etc) which every studio could work in to (which was amongst the original plans for the building).

Yes, many of the radio studios are wired or equipped for "visual radio", although there isn't much of it broadcast in the UK.

At 17GMT & 20GMT wouldn't it not make sense for Outside Source to use Gallery C? Otherwise at both times it would have to use the virtual studio, this way it has a real studio it can use.

Outside source comes from the balcony.

Yes but when there is a problem, as has happened, they have to use the studio that corresponds to the gallery.

Alternatively, as happened last week, if you have a really complicated programme which relies on all sorts of bits of kit being able to talk to each other but can't, you abandon the programme and broadcast from wherever you can. They don't have to use the gallery that is specified in the schedules, they are at liberty to send any gallery output to any network as they see fit.

The relationship is the opposite way round to what you seem to be thinking. They have to use the gallery that corresponds to a particular studio to get that studio in air. For locally produced programmes that don't come from a NBH studio, they still need a gallery, but can use any that is available and has the facilities they require.

So no, they wont be forced to use studio A if problems mean they cant broadcast OS.

How come then when they had problems to the screen and resorted to a studio they had to use B for OS?

Yes, if you watch 5 Live's 606 or Kermode and Mayo live stream you will see this in action.

Because B was available, and had the OS settings and configuration available and working? OS has been cancelled in the past when they've had automation issues.

Yes, i assumed though it was because of the screen (in that instance) and the gallery was set up already.

Yes I'm aware that depending on the problem the solution will be different.

Though it would potentially have been a lot better if studios and galleries were not tied together.

Many new studio buildings have galleries and studios that are independent of each other. This has huge benefits for maintenance, and also allows more flexible deployment of resources. Some big studio shows don't need a big gallery, some small studio shows need a lot of gallery resources. Some shows need a big sound desk, some don't etc.

Also - some studio complexes have more studios than galleries, allowing galleries to switch between studios for various reasons. (Some shows have standing sets, but only broadcast at certain times of the day for instance)
