I suspect it's a mixture of cost cutting and lots of cut and paste jobs. You often see the same content being recycled in different articles. I agree, it isn't very professional. If I make a change to my organisation's website it has to go through two checks before it's published. I'm surprised so many errors seem to slip through the net at the BBC.
I challenge you to find a news website, with constant updates, that doesn't have a fair smattering of typos.
Indeed - NewsDiffs tracks a lot of the changes that occur on various sites (including bbc.co.uk). I believe that TV Forum was where I heard about the site first.

Matthew and Kate Garraway both did the 1900-2300 (I think it was 2300, it might have been 2200) slot on News 24 at launch (don't think he did BBC World before - though I may be wrong) The slot was single-headed - so only one of them presented each day. (This is from memory)
They used to present with a graphic inset with the time on it - but at 2100 they weren't able to have a "9 O'Clock News" graphic as the BBC One bulletins team (which at that time was a different department) veto-ed it ISTR...
