It seems like they really use it a lot now. It seems like I've seen it at least once a day in the last few days. My only complaint is that I wish the chime was something other than the end of a News in Brief segment, and given the kinds of stories that they've been using it for, perhaps "Just In" would be a better title.
Why is it that BBC News seems to hate Gill Sans so much lately? That breaking news sting looks so generic and bland with Helvetica. Looses it's BBC-ness.
Indeed, bizarrely this breaks the brand guidelines. All titles/stings should use Gill Sans. It's only on screen furniture and in programme graphics that should use Helvetica.

And even then, they shouldn't. All graphics pre-NBH, including straps, were using Gill Sans. It frustrates me that such simple steps towards a consistent brand are blatantly ignored.
This always happens. They have a half hearted brand refresh where they change much of the on-screen look, but are not consistent with it, and it becomes a mish mash of styles and implementations.

We've seen this before Laimbie Nairn(sp?) create them an identity they go for Gil Sans and then bbc news has a revamp with their own team and they favour helvetica, the only difference this time is they've kept the original titles but of course are now using Helvetica for lower thirds, maps, slides and so on, its strange because then on BBC Arabic, Persian it still uses the old graphics so its fair to say it is a mish mash of styles and implementations as mdtauk has rightly said, theres even two versions now of the BBC News logo, you have to wonder how this can happen.
There is not a mish-mash. Gill Sans does not look good for general text, so they use Helvetica. Simple. They did it between 2003 and 2008 too. It doesn't result in an inconsistent brand.
its a little bit mishy mashy if you look at BBC News channels as a whole, take for example the different versions of the logo floating around, its almost as Red Bee and BBC News at Broadcasting House dont have the same files, its worst on World where they are using BBC World News and the red is the old one instead of the china red used in BH's version, the World breakfillers use Gil Sans, I know why the BBC want to use Helvetica, but again when they go back to the design agency they always insist on using Gils for everything and then we are back to square one.
