Well BBC World News looks really good in its studios, I think it deserves to be in HD which it is already, can you imagine watching Focus in Africa with that wonderfully green lit studio b set in HD.

But in Europe only Sky News HD has made it to an alternative provider, viasat, neither CNN or BBC World News hd are available on any of the european providers and there just seems to be no interest from them either, but asia, middle east and the US are now receiving them.

Its such a shame after moving to dedicated HD facilities that no man or woman can watch BBC World News HD in Europe.

The point is that it doesn't matter about interest from the providers if there's no viewers interested in paying more for the service to get the HD signal.

They might want to pay more, have the BBC done a survey, how do you know what Telenor's customers want?

Maybe they should ask via that Global Minds thing they use and find out.

I would be very surprised if the providers don't carry out research into what sort of channels would attract more customers and more money from those customers. On the other hand, it's unlikely the BBC will be doing that sort of research, instead they'll be talking to those providers to find out if they're interested in taking the service, and how much money they would be willing to pay.

In the end, it still comes down to whether the public are willing to pay more for HD simulcasts of the news. How good the lighting would look in Studio B is completely irrelevant to those types of business decisions.

It's also pretty clear that if people had been contacting their providers going "I'd pay an extra €10/month just to see Focus on Africa in HD", that the channel would be available in HD, it's only the carriage agreements which prevent it.

I think they would its expanding in Asia, Arabsat are broadcasting FTA but you need a 3m dish to get it, and a few providers in the US are, so they seem to think their customers would pay and wouldnt BBC World News HD be included as part of the HD package so they get a share of the subscription?

How much would it cost for the FTA signal at 13e to be in HD for example?

Apart from the men and women who live in the UK (part of Europe) who can watch BBC World News on BBC Two when it airs in the 1130-1200 slot on BBC Two HD.

UK audiences will, presumably, also be able to watch BBC World News Today at 1900 on BBC Four HD when that launches soon.

Plus BBC One HD often shows the BBC News/BBC World News joint service overnight.

(These FTA broadcasts are also visible outside the UK with the right dish and receiver)

There wasn't a huge drive to produce BBC News in HD until it became harder to get SD cameras and editing equipment. Now that more HD acquisition equipment is in use, more material is being shot in HD, so it makes more sense if the channel is delivered in HD. Of course the BBC moving to W1 was a very big shift towards HD in that almost all the infrastructure for live news at TC was SD only.

How much would it cost to get a FTA HD direct to home signal at 13e do GlobeCast charge double how does it work?

I guess you pay "per bit" in bandwith terms - so SD at 2-4Mbs will cost a lot less than HD at 6-12Mbs?

Has anyone listened to the new World Service programme Outside Source? It is on at 11am UKT. The BBC have said it will launch on World News in 2014 and so far I've been reasonably impressed with what I have heard. A bit gimicky in places but a good story count.
