It kind of harks back to the early 2000s when Carrie used to present the evening shift on News 24 (albeit with a co presenter).
Be interesting if this is now her shift and Clive is solely presenting on BBC One, which I feel suits him better. I do like Clive, but I much prefer it when someone like Martine is doing The Papers.

Except at the time, the shift probably didn't involve so much sitting around. She must get a solid 90 minutes on air (8pm hour, The Papers and 15 minutes at 11pm...)

How do you know that the duty news presenter is just 'sitting around'? Just because they are not on air doesn't mean that they are not doing something else. During the 9pm hour, when OS is normally on, Studio E is probably being used for preparation for the News at Ten. The duty presenter could then be in the newsroom, doing general help with newsgathering, indeed most probably preparing their Papers Review for later in the evening (hasn't Martine, in some interview said, or otherwise made public, about meeting her guests at 9 or 9.30, when the papers come in? If so, they are not sitting around but could be preparing the papers review or taking a half hour or hour long break in the middle of an evening shift - just the same as any other time during the day might have a lunch break).

Martine did indeed, funnily enough in an interview I did with her on Cambridge 105 Radio in 2016.

Good point, but it doesn't take away from the fact that her evenings in 1999 and 2018 are probably somewhat different... I should have phrased my statement better; of course no newsreader is 'sitting around' but they are certainly off air and not dealing with rolling news like they used to.
And neither should it, IMO. It would be too contrived. What's in the past is best left in the past, I guess.
A reunion for a one-off programme or for a week long would be different. But a permanent reunion doesn't always work.
I'd disagree. It's a natural partnership and though Simon works well by himself, he works even better bouncing off someone else who understands him completely, which I feel Carrie has been the only one. After watching Carrie this week, I feel she would fare much better with a co-host as well.
Obviously the only slight difficulty is that there's no longer any double headed presentation on the News Channel anymore so that's where I can understand your point.
Maybe Carrie needs to be at Simon's side in April when the Royal baby is born. I think he's going to need some moral support by his side at the very least!
Trying to figure if that means she's on the back shift...
Clive presented the 6 today I think.
Clive presented both the 1 and the 6.
But considering he spends at least as much time away from the evening shift (on assignment and BBC1) as on it and is often covered by freelancers it would probably be more cost effective for him to be replaced...
Well more effective to replace the freelancers which is hopefully what they've done. Effectively a regular presenting slot without kicking anyone out of theirs.
