Robin Brant is moving from being a political correspondent to become the BBC's Shanghai correspondent, replacing John Sudworth who has moved to Beijing.

This is his second stint in east Asia, having previously been the correspondent in Kuala Lumpur.

I don't seem to have seen Carrie Gracie reporting recently. Quite surprising given the constant stream of news from China and its economy.

I'd imagine that she's just on leave.

Steve Evans is filling in at the moment from Beijing.

Looks like a bit of a demotion, to be honest. I realise a lot pf these titles are rather specious, but I would've thought a Deputy Editor outranks a common or garden correspondent?

Still, maybe he's fed up with being overlooked for the political editor's job?

Maybe he welcomes an alternative brief and who is to say that it isn't a sideways move or promotion. Just because it doesn't say Editor I'd have thought it was one of the more high profile roles.

Just don't see it as a demotion at all. I think the word "Diplomatic" here is far more important than the word "correspondent". It's a plum job.

Just think how much Bridget Kendall and James Robbins are respected. Whenever they appear on set they have the aura of expertise and importance.
