From her Twitter it seems she was attending the CarFest event, so was presumably on site when the incident took place.

Yes, she was there for her own pleasure and so when it happened she was well placed to report on it. I'm reminded of when Jonny Saunders the sports reporter did the Beeb's initial reports on a train crash a decade or so ago, because he was actually on the train when it crashed.

Yes, he was on the Ufton Nervet crash in 2004, a First Great Western train stuck a car on a level crossing
to the west of Reading. Tim Grundy, the then MD on Reading 107 FM lived in the village and also provided reports for IRN and ITN I seem to recall.

Happens a lot. Many initial reports on 7/7 were from journos on their way into work. I seem to recall plenty of contributions from broadcasters stranded abroad due to the volcanic ash cloud the other year.

Gavin Hewitt is named 'Chief Correspondent'. Seems like a new post, very American.

It's a shame Laura Bicker has gone to the US, she's been very good in Scotland.

The East Africa Correspondent post has been filled by Karen Allen, as she reported from Nirobi for the President's visit and currently from Reunion for the developing MH370 story. Don't know how permanent it is as she's moved round a bit since leaving Johannesburg.

Karen is "BBC Foreign Correspondent covering Africa and Afghanistan" and is "based in Johannesburg and Kabul"

Is that a more senior position than Lyse Doucet's Chief International correspondent position?

The East Africa role based in Nairobi is being fulfilled by Alastair Leithead, although he is titled "Africa Correspondent".

I'm pretty sure that Karen Allen is still based in Johannesburg covering a wide range of stories.

The on-air titles aren't always right.

Gabriel Gatehouse labelled as Newsnight correspondent.

Has Karishma Vasarni (excuse the spelling) been replaced as Indonesia Editor?

You can say that again. I'm amazed how so many reporters can be labelled as different things. Doesn't the BBC have a definitive list of correspondent titles?

Martin Patience has now taken over from Will Ross in Lagos as Nigeria Correspondent, and John Sudworth has moved from Shanghai to Beijing.

No news as to whether a replacement is going to be posted to Shanghai as yet.
