Love the orchestral mix! Wish they would move towards a more orchestral style again. Shows that the drums and beeps can live on without using loads of computer sampling, rather than a 1993-esque score
Really emotive piece of music, rarely used, but nevertheless..show's how talented David Lowe really is.
That was the 'Obituary' theme from around the year 2000. There were 3 openings, 3 closings and a sting if I remember correctly. Rarely used, I certainly never heard it on air.
I think it was used quite extensively for the coverage of Pope John Paul's death. Even, from memory, made its way onto network.
I think ever since 2008 BBC WN's countdowns have been pretty boring with the overused thunderclaps and beats but 2013's mix is something else!
Kudos to the team and David Lowe I think they did a pretty fantastic job this time round especially with the orchestra mix; I love how it switches over to the electro-beats towards the end!
Is that not one of the old, rather boring countdowns?
Hmmm, 3mins long... not heard it before - heard some parts of it, not the whole thing.
When countdown music changed in 2006, David Lowe released a three-minute version for the BBC News website. This was a period which saw viewers sending in their own versions to be played over the countdown before the six o'clock news on Fridays. They generally weren't very good.
