Is there any reason why this Dobbie chap couldn't do a bulletin for World himself, or why didn't the TOTH go straight from the titles to Tim, seeing he is known on both NC & World, & him saying along the lines of 'Welcome to BBC News live from London, broadcasting around the world'?

It just looked messy, according to that clip.

Apparently, from what I've read in the past here, bbc world's TOTH is shorter than the NCs.

I thought it was a bit weird, but there must have been some reason behind it.

It often happens when a story of global importance is breaking. In the case of yesterday, Gadaffi son was captured. The BBC had lined up a series of reports, interviews and two ways, which made sense to show on both World and News Channel. To optimize resources at HQ and in the field, the output is combined or simulcast.

The News Channel headlines may have included some UKcentric stories which are irrelevant to World. That being the case, World always starts with it's own intro and top lines, before cutting to News Channel to share the top story coverage for a length of time. Once covered, both channels will split again back to their respective audiences.

Not sure why the World intro is shorter than the NC, except that perhaps NC covers more stories in the headlines as they run 1 hour segments, whilst World runs only 30 minutes or sometimes 7 minute bulletins.

I think it's just because the News Channel like to waffle on. Whilst I haven't sat down and counted, I'm not convinced the News Channel cover that many more stories than World in the headlines but rather they cover them with longer sentences and more vox pops and speeches. Maybe it's because World used to have timed thunderclaps they're still used to writing the much better, more succinct headlines.

When they decided to just restart the vamp and got rid of the timed thunderclaps from BBC One bulletins, for a while the headlines remained short and snappy, as they should be, but as time has gone on, they've got longer and longer (particularly on the first story).

The headline sequence on the Ten frequently is about 2 minutes long, for a bulletin that lasts 35 minutes..!

35 minutes including the regions, and the long headline sequence includes headlines from the regions...

As it was of world importance, why did World join the NC?

Surely it should be the other way round?

Maybe because Peter Dobbie isn't as well known to a UK audience as Tim Willcox and Martine Croxall are, whereas Tim and Martine are known to both UK and international viewers.

But didn't Peter use to be a presenter on NC??

He started on World in the nineties, moved to News 24 early part of the last decade, and back to World a few days ago.

I believe NC as opposed to World hosted the simulcast because they have more resources in their studio than N9 does, such as news walls and screens for the two way conversations. N9 only has a tiny plasma. Given the news was of significance globally, meant it also led on the NC.

By the way, I can see why they were in N9 at the weekend. N8 has had a lighting refresh. The red lighting at the corner of the studio is now brighter than ever, nice backdrop for Karin Giannones current segment. Will get a better indication of how good it is on The Hub in thirty minutes, although half of it will be with Lyse in Cairo.

If this was a weekend, then BBC World News regularly carries recorded programming for most of the hour, and these hours are lead by a short 10 or 15 minute bulletin. (Like hours when they show the Doha Debates, or two programmes, like The Health show followed by HARDtalk.)

Peter Dobbie was probably not scheduled to present a 30 minute bulletin during these hours. He usually does a 7 hour shift on the weekend, sometimes longer. So when a big story breaks, it makes sense to switch to the NC. As someone else has said, on a normal weekend, World News is simply not set up to run breaking news all day.
