It's a shame that the current pres assets don't include an update of the brilliant 'extended close' and 'extended close - sombre' pieces that were part of the 2000 presentation resources. These were put to excellent use during BBC World's 9/11 and Iraq War coverage, of course, but to my knowledge, they weren't replaced in the 2004 or 2008 pres updates.
Now there's something I've
definitely
not seen for a while - Mike Embley just signed off the 2300GMT bulletin with a "let's have a look back at some of the extraordinary images from Libya from the past few days" - played over a headline bed, with occasional thunderclaps. All it was missing was a proper closing sequence - instead we got a bit of World pres. (it was some countdown clips with breakfiller-ish music)

There was definitely an extended close from the 2007 package; it wasn't very sombre but it was extended. Not sure if it was ever used but I've got a copy of it on another computer.

There's been extended opens and closes for the 2003 and 2008 packages as well. However, like you say they weren't particularly sombre - nowhere near as sombre as the 2000 and 2002 mixes, anyway.

Actually, Rob, I managed to save the headline vamp from The World Today (1999 - Donald and Nici) as my ringtone on my mobile! Love it.
In fact, I liked the sombre version of the pre-David Lowe themes as well.

It was used for the closing of the French election coverage on News 24 and World in 2007.

[As a small aside, EID MUBARAK to all of you in BBC Worldland and elsewhere who may be celebrating the festival of Eid Al-Fitr, which has been announced for tomorrow, Tuesday. And so ends another month of Ramadan. Eid Mubarak.]

for those not following in the News Channel thread, Newsday is in N6 this week.
They even had a guest in this evening:

I wish they'd rebrand that studio, and make it bigger as well.

^^^ You won't be the first or last to say this. I'd love a bigger studio which is similar to Washington with obviously a large screen, but still keeping that excellent Singapore view that they have. They deserve better than than shoebox!
