Yup it's the music I take issue with rather than the graphics. It's so unpleasant, it's like someone has drunkenly fallen onto a keyboard or something.

I've seen a few of the 22.00 BST editions of BBC World News this week - I quite like Mike Embley co-presenting with someone (it livens the channel up a bit, as it can be a bit one-paced at times) but are Jamie Robertson and Tanya Beckett really the best choices? Neither seem particularly comfortable with presenting news, which is surprising given how long both have been presenting business on the channel. I think it would work a lot better if they got a 'proper' female co-presenter for Mike on the late shift, e.g. someone like Lucy Hockings/Lyse Doucet etc. They'd be much more at ease covering the news stories and they could still wheel in Jamie and Tanya for the business news.

That slot, Rob, was the slot vacated by Tanya Becketts Business Edition. So, I guess the new double header was launched on the premise that it would be business themed. Indeed, at the bottom of the hour when the one minute headline recap comes along, it is a recap of the business lines only, read by Tanya, Jamie or whomever may be the duty presenter. It can be a bit of an awkward program at times, and often I feel that Jamie fits in better with Mike than Tanya does.

By the way, Tanya has been very frequently on The World Today these last few weeks. I watched her Monday and Tuesday this week doing it.

Thanks for explaining that, James. I remember seeing Tanya's Business Edition. Strangely, I seem to recall her being better presenting on her own. She doesn't seem at all comfortable co-presenting with Mike. It ends up feeling a bit lacklustre.

Is The World Today still branded as such these days? Who presents it now? And is it still in the same format as it was when it launched with a news and biz presenter co-presenting? Apologies for all the questions, but I never see it with it being on at 0500 here!

No I don't think it is, I caught it not that long ago on the NC and it's just branded as 'BBC World News' and Jonathon Charles was presenting it with someone else. Not sure who it was though.

No, its now just branded as BBC World News. The top of the first and second hours are often introduced (dare I say it) standing up at the news wall, with the newsreader reading the top lines offscreen. Then both the news and business readers will appear in vision and introduce themselves by name ("Welcome to BBC World News. I'm Martine Dennis....and I'm Sally Bundock. Later, on World Business Report........blah, blah, blah....")

The news presenter will then reappear after the opening music alone to read the first story from the wall, and proceed to the desk for the rest of the program. Sometimes, the entire thing is done from the desk.

Usually at +7m, the business presenter will come on and give a brief review of the main buzz stories and some chit chat. Then at approximate +14m, when some of the World audience opts away for three minutes or so, there is a small segment covering a couple of UK biased stories.

New addition at +20ish, is the presence of a Sports Presenter. This only started when Newsday was launched. Usually, the main newsreader did the sport.

Cheerio at bottom of the hour, using the now standard World door slamming "bye". Back at the bottom with a recap od the headlines, handover to WBR, which is now only twelve or so minutes. Back after the break for another recap of the headlines with Martine, this time slightly longer than a minute though, and often featuring interview clips within.

Then a wide shot of the studio with the two presenters seated at the desk and a guest newspaper reviewer perched at the sharp end of the ellipse (the place where Mishal sits for Impact). A twelve or so minutes newspaper review and some banter, then a proper closure with both anchors saying bye at the end, usually in a badly and hurried manner.

Main news presenters are Komla Dumor and Naga Munchetty who appear to alternate week aver week, with Martine usually doing Fridays plus one other day randomly in between.

Business presenters are usually Sallys Bundock and Eden alternating one week after the other, with what used to be Juliette Foster or Sara Coburn on a Friday. Tanya has done the last four Fridays though.

Sports presenters on duty are normally Matt Gooderick or Amelia Harris.

Occasional newspresenters filling in are Karin Giannine, Peter Dobbie, David Eades and - of course, but rather rarely, Timothy!

LOL. Hope the above makes sense.

As Gaz points out, JC was the resident anchor unti, he left his job in broadcasting a few months ago.

Thanks for that rundown, James. Very informative. Interesting that they've recently re-introduced a dedicated sport presenter on TWT. That's how it was when it came back after its hiatus in 2001. Those were some good days - Dennis and Beckett on TWT and the excellent team of Gowing, Doucet, Cole, Pillai, Navaratnam, McNaught, Finighan, Jessel, Brancher and Hayton covering the rest of the week. Ahhh, memories Smile

On the point of breakfillers, there's this mock that's been floating around youtube since 2008.
Basically how the 2001-2ish breakfiller would look in todays graphic package.

Why am I tuning in to the News Channel at 02:15 to find a 'recorded' Newsday bulletin?

According to Kasia Madera on Twitter, they had some technical problems and had to repeat an hour of the program me. Coming up live again with Kasia and Sharanjit at the top of the next hour though.

Really interesting to watch World and NC side by side during the 1am hour, I am surprised World viewers put up with all the breaks for trailers. Is there anywhere in the world where local broadcasters are inserting their own adverts still?

Most interesting is after 1:30, where Babita does an extra headline for the UK, while Asia Business Support is introduced by continuity on World, then has to hold on the BBC World News symbol while Babita introduces it in vision for the UK.

It's also strange seeing the same weather presenter doing domestic and international weather at the same time, the World weather forecast is much shorter.

I notice there is now a World Football Focus (Friday 21:30 BST) and a half hour edition of Final Score (Saturday 17:30 BST - after the BBC1 programme has finished).
