I really hope that on weekends they won't only use the new small set since all bulletins are regular BBCWN.
So the main desk is only used for the new set of programmes? That smaller set is perfectly fine for summaries within programmes, but a half hour of "BBC World News," in my opinion, should still come from the main desk. Does sport now come from the smaller set as well? If it does, that's a bit of a shame - the tiny bit of banter between presenters adds another angle - maybe it's just me. I do get the feeling that it's a tad disjointed and bitty - and that's just from the Youtube clips, so probably isn't a fair judgement. Visually, they have done pretty well adapting the studio.
Actually the main set was used by Johnathan Charles and Sally Bandock for the first 3 hours (5-8 am). Then David Eades anchored from the small set from 8 till 12. After that GMT and Impact Asia were done in the main set.
2 BBCWN editions with Geeta at 3 & 6 pm were don in the small set.
WNT with Zainab is also done from the usual anchoring position at the main set.
Sport updates came from random places depending on which part of the set was used for the main show. Sport Today was done at the newswall as usual.
EDIT: BBCWN with Mike Embley is using the newswall and the main set as usual.
uh... can anyone upload World News Today with Zeinab on YouTube?
I cannot upload it considering it is shown 3am here in the Philippines, and I have classes...
They can't simulcast @ that time because of the PBS schedule newscast and HardTalk @ the bottom of the hour. Hardtalk is the only non straight news program to remain in the weekday schedule so it just won't happen.

The PBS newscast is at 11pm UK / 6pm ET, though for the West Coast, they substitute the 2am UK / 9pm ET bulletin which gets seen on BBC2. The PBS situation doesn't affect the 9pm UK hour.

The 9pm UK/ 4 pm ET is what I get on my local PBS and so many other stations get that. My PBS use that feed at 5:30pm ET so they can't possibly be using the 6/11 feed.
Out of interest does anyone in the know.. NickyS and co, know if the back wall still says "BBC News 24"? Did they change/remove it while making the other tweaks that have taken place?
It's said BBC WORLD NEWS since World moved in in 2008
My two cents about the BBC World News 're-fresh' (after view theBlocker's videos & watching some of the programs myself):
Positives:
- Titles & music for the new shows are really good, especially the 'Impact Asia' package (titles & music) which are fantastic.
- Use of the studio, like the fact that each of the new shows together takes full advantage of the full set (something News 24 didn't really do when they used the studio pre-2008). Like with GMT, it's based at the main desk while The Hub is based at the 'news-wall'.
- For GMT, Impact Asia & The Hub, the format isn't based around the one single hour/90 minute show - the three shows are actually based around 30-minute parts. Each part reports about the news of the day, but unlike CNN where you see repeat after repeat of stories - each half-hour also has other content (like with yesterday's The Hub, first half-hour had a webcam contribution from America & the second half hour had an interview with a queen - can't remember her name).
- Like how the weekday schedule is now focused on news, with the only non-news show being 'Hardtalk'. The schedule clearly has more news bulletins, like some hours you would have a 'BBC World News' bulletin, then a World or Asia Business Report/Sports Today bulletin at :30 & another 'BBC World News' bulletin at :45.
Things to Improve On:
- Those five-minute episodes of fast:track, Click & Talking Movies. I was thinking that they would replace a break-filler every few hours or so, but it seems like other shows & bulletins are having to end five minutes earlier to fit these shows in. That's how it shouldn't work, either air them instead of ads/break-fillers sometimes (time permitting, although there should be plenty of content for different amounts of time) or do what an edition of World News Today did for a while. On Friday's, a ten-minute edition of Talking Movies would air at :40 during WNT - all that needs to be done is set aside one day where there's a five-minute edition of the 'magazine shows' during GMT, Impact Asia, etc.
- Get rid of the program bug!! I don't understand why most news channels feel a need to have a on-air graphic telling people what program they're watching, when we live in a age where finding out what's on/what's airing is as simple as a push of a button or a click of the mouse away. If a program bug must be needed, I would incorporate it into the 'tab' section of the lower-thirds (what I mean is where 'Internet' & 'Breaking News') is displayed in the tab section above the lower-thirds - that way it would only appear when the lower-thirds appears & it wouldn't be over-sized.
Overall though, I think BBC World News have done this refresh well. They've seen the mistakes CNNI did with their relaunch & tried to avoid them at the same time, while making the channel better at the same time.
