Owen was probably presenting from the pod because the main desk was being used for Dateline, or some other such programme. Perhaps the News Channel studio was being kept vacant in case of breaking news today?
As well as Libya, there are some other stories which could have kicked-off today, requiring a news desk to be available. Protests in London being one such potential story which would have been tricky to bring if the main news desk was busy recording another programme.

My guess anyway, ginny fan.
So was Dateline London on anywhere today, because the NC didn't have it at 1230 today understandably, along with their other 'back half hour' programmes, as it normally comes from N6?
Why on Earth did BBCWN show some random boat racing competition today? I tuned in at 1800cet to see the news but there was none. It became a sports channel for an hour or so, not sure when this started and ended.

I'm sure there have been complaints before about BBC World showing the Oxford/Cambridge boat race?
It may be a global news channel, but it's still a British global news channel. I'm sure that British citizens abroad and ex-pats enjoy watching it, and it's not the end of the world for less than an hour in the entire YEAR of programming to be devoted to something so quintessentially British.
It may not have universal appeal, but then I'm sure there are large chunks of the BBC World News viewership who find Fast:Track to be terminally dull, who have no interest in World Business Report, or wish The World Debate would make way for other programming.
Just because it happens to be of little interest to you does not mean it has no place on the channel at all. I think it's a great thing to have these small pockets of Britishness - and they are small, and infrequent - like the Boat Race or the Queen's Christmas Message, as they reach out to Britons abroad, they're often of interest to Commonwealth citizens, and yes, even some other viewers may enjoy them too.
This shock, horror and incredulity over the broadcast of the Boat Race on BBC World News is as tedious as it is ridiculous. With the greatest of respect to those who disagree with me on this, get over it already.
I never knew this was an annual thing or something like that. First time I saw it today and it surprised me since it looks like something CNN would do on weekends. I honestly thought they had some mix up in the gallery and that they took the feed of one of bbc domestic channels or red button streams.

Was it Claire Balding, as she did the BBC One coverage?

The ironic thing is that because of DST, iDesk was on at 6pmCET yesterday, so CNNI were actually showing live news when BBC World weren't

Yes, seemingly BBC Wold News simulcast the BBC One coverage with Clare, as she welcomed World viewers on the BBC One broadcast at around 16:35 GMT.
Now watching the new double-header slot (10pm UK) with Mike Embley and Tanya Beckett. Good team, and sharing the same style in spectacles, it seems! I understood the bulletin was to be branded "The World Today". It appears to be going out as BBC World News?
