The ticker has been broken for the past few minutes on World...just a grey box, no text scrolling.

Yep, I saw that too. Still, there not getting closes in to the 5 o'clock hour! Komla and Sally is one to watch - there's usually a good 3 seconds of silence whilst she starts to read the main news and he looks at her as if to say what are you doing?!!!

Seen that, it is just awful - I really don't understand why whomever is in charge of outputting that programme doesn't recognise that a decent scripted and timed goodbye is so desperately needed. Surely day after day of bumbling and stumbling programme closes is enough for even the most useless or inexperienced programme editor to notice that something needs to be addressed.

The whole program doesn't seem as integrated as the former The World Today, as shown here... it's a shame really as the 5.00 hour really has a potential to be good (and should be, considering it's on BBC One, News Channel and World!!)

It seems they're no longer able to fill the full back-half hour of World Business Report as well - when I've watched recently, WBR runs from 0532-0542, and then goes to a break; when it returns, we get the international headlines, and then almost 15 minutes of newspaper reviews between the news and WBR presenter, and a studio-based guest.

Given how many important business and economy stories there are these days, I find it startling that a full quarter of an hour is wasted on vacuous banter about newspaper articles. Utterly tedious and uninformative, and as you suggest, a far cry from the good ol' days of the more integrated The World Today newshour.

Cost-cutting, cost-cutting, cost-cutting. The budget was cut and WBR was hacked back. The paper review was a cheaper option to fill the air-time.

No, I disagree. I think that that newspaper review is quite unique for British television and that it what we need for BBC One at 0550! It is far more detailed than say Sian and Bill on Breakfast reading out one headline and that's it. Also, it is often quite nice and light, particularly with Naga and Sally Eden and that is nice to see. As for "international viewers" - I still think it's a good idea; you don't get this on CNN, (mostly) Sky World News, euronews, Bloomberg or any other channel that springs to mind!

There's nothing particularly unique about this kind of newspaper review on British television; the BBC News Channel (and News 24 before it) has carried newspaper reviews with studio guests for sometime now - there's usually a 5-6 minute review at around 2350 on weekdays, for example - and I recall seeing similar ones on the ITN/ITV News Channel and Sky News in the past (although I don't watch Sky News often enough or for long enough these days to comment on how much coverage newspaper reviews currently get there).

For UK viewers, there's very little to recommend in the 0500 hour news review; many of the articles discussed come from newspapers that are not widely read or distributed in the UK, such as Le Figaro, Le Monde, the International Herald Tribune, and the like. I have no objection to getting a flavour of international news digests, but a quarter of an hour of banter - however 'nice and light' it may be - labouring the personal opinions of the studio guest about a small section of articles... that's a bit much for me.

A key point to remember, perhaps, is that one that I just mentioned, in that it's not really a representative summary of how the news is being reported by press from around the globe; it really comes down to one person's opinions on subjects and stories that they've handpicked from newspapers that many viewers, whether in the UK or around the world, won't even have seen at their news-stands - and fifteen minutes of that seems like ten minutes too long for my tastes. I'd much rather see an extra ten minutes of actual business news than sit through some pompous oaf bloviating about how they think it's just marvellous to see such exciting press coverage about Italian stamp collectors, or how they think that El Pais has such a lovely photo of President Hugo Chavez but it's such a shame that it's tucked away on page 30 instead of on the front page.

Meanwhile, global supply chains are being disrupted due to fallout from the Japanese quake/tsunami, Volkswagen wants to buy Alfa Romeo, Boeing's 747-8 Intercontinental has just made its first flight but is still struggling to sell, and any number of other juicy business stories are developing around the globe... and instead of reporting on these stories, what used to be the World Business Report has been reduced to an episode of Loose Women, with a gaggle of voices all talking over each other with opinions that don't really matter.

Still, I respect your opinion, and I don't doubt that there'll be others who share it.

Whilst I actually thoroughly enjoy the daily paper review on TWT, and see it as a welcome addition to the programme, I agree that the business news coverage on BBC World is a shadow of it's former self. The biz segments are very condensed, apart from the daily Asia Business Report from Singapore, and also the biz segment on GMT.

Coverage during and in-between other bulletins is hardly anything. Quite disappointing in my opinion, as World formerly had very solid business news coverage. Even the pillar that is Tanya Beckett hardly appears any more, relegated to two days a week at the most. Otherwise, it's a quick skip through the business.

WBR at the moment with "Aaron Heslehusrt", with an extra "s"? Sloppy again, seems to be a habit on World.

Not an extra 's', but the 'r' and 's' are back to front; it should be 'Heslehurst'.

My bad, LDN. And how ironic that I should make an error even worse than theirs (blushes). It was actually "Heslehusrst" that appeared on the screen.

Lucy Hockings on The Hub tonight, for the first time IIRC. And seated at the desk too. (Initially wondered why, but Frank Gardner's appearance as a studio guest kind of explained why.)

I think World could do with a new programme at the moment. Some of these branded outputs are becoming a little bit "stale".

I think Hub should be presented from the main desk. Their current set up is too cluttered and especially with Nick who's a bit wide and looks totally uncomfortable in that small corner on a stool. As World's senior presenter he should present from the main desk position.

Is BBC starting a new schedule from this weekend? My EPG lists all the weekday shows for today (Impact,Hub,WNT, WBR, 30 minute WNA edition at 2200 cet). Also Owen is presenting from the smaller set used for weekday news updates.

EDIT: Just ignore me, it's my EPG mistake, the usual weekend stuff is on now.
