Is it me or is N8 very poorly lit this morning? Seems extremely dark compared to how it usually is.

Yes, it was actually. Although its fine now. Yesterday during The Hub, they had switched the GMT purple lighting on, instead of the Hub red. Was weird.

On Impact (with Lyse Douchet) today, she did a DTL interview with John McCain of all people, coming from the camera position overlooking the newsroom in NBH.

Lots of the TV screens still not turned on and desks empty.

The chairman of the BBC Trust has said additional funding will be made available to BBC World News as the 24-hour news channel is brought closer to BBC World Service radio. One area for improvement will be the back half hours that currently broadcast a range of feature programmes when rival broadcasters are continuing with rolling news.

So while the BBC News Channel is cutting back resources on back half hours, it appears that the opposite will be true for BBC World News. Perhaps the back half hour could be shared more?

In the long term, for World News, I think this could mean more programming like "Focus on Africa" & "World News America", using world service staff to target back-half-hour bulletins on specific regions. We could see a raft of programmes targeted at Australia/New Zealand, Asia Pacific, India and the Middle East.

With this additional money I can see World likely expanding one of the foreign bureaux for these programmes to be based out of, perhaps having a proper Studio base somewhere in Asia Pacific? (Singapore?) Much like its competitors.

...for Domestic, I would say we are looking at a definite reduction in presenters.

Lord Patten said that from 2014 when the [commercially funded] BBC World News goes directly onto the BBC’s books it will be seen as part of the corporation’s offering to the world.

Does this potentially mean we could see a commercial free version of BBC World News becoming available within the UK? From the stream I'm watching the only things you'd need to remove are the very few instances of sponsorship tags.

Well even now World has cut most of it's taped shows, the only stuff that airs in second half hour is WBR, ST and Hardtalk 2 times a day. In the morning they really increased the hours of rolling news, especially with ST gone. I just wish they would drop the short 5 minute segments of their weekend shows that they air before toth.

That's exactly what I'm seeing here. Which "feed" do you get? I live in Canada so I presume I am getting the North America / US & Canada feed (and I'll be honest and say I have no idea about the different World News versions; I'm just taking a guess).

Also, I note that on most of the promos, when the end-board come up, the text is *slightly* off the right hand side of the screen. It's not possible on most promos to see the final digit of the time, or most of the final letter of the program name, if it is long enough. The exception to this is the One Square Mile promo, where I can see the final digit. There's one more exception that I forget at present too. Is BBC World News transmitted in 14:9 or 4:3? My provider (Shaw Direct) carries it in 4:3, although there was a period a few months ago where they were carrying it in 14:9 for a while. Not sure why they changed back to 4:3 though.

BBC World (as it originates from London) used to be broadcast in 4:3 with news output being 14:9, but for the past few years the entire channel has been fully 16:9. I suspect the reason you're not seeing all the onscreen information is because your provider is cropping the picture from its native 16:9. As the graphics will probably be less 4:3 safe than they used to be, this means you end up seeing less.

On the new breakfiller/promos, I've yet to see them on air, but from the stills posted here...yuk! It's scandalous when one thinks back to the awesome BBC World breakfillers of the late 90s and early 00s.

On a lighter note, Martine Dennis' home baking was sampled LIVE on air this morning during a newspaper review story about Nigella Lawson.

Aaron Heslehurst has now replaced Tanya Beckett as the Friday morning co presenter alongside Martine, they're just as good a pairing as Martine and Tanya were. A very, very lively programme.

As for the new Breakfiller, I'm starting to like it actually. In fact, the entire output on the channel at the moment appears to be much fresher and, generally, looking better. And N8 is still looking better than ever ever before. (I will refrain from using the word "sexy" as it mystifies many of you........)

I receive the feed for Germany. I am irritated, because the old breakfiller was broadcasted relatively often. Since the new one I have only seen promos.

I wouldn't say just the light box looks fake, it all looks pretty fake. You can see the technology in Studio A isn't as advanced as ITN, but then ITN use theirs for flagship bulletins every day.

I think it's less a matter of poor technology and more of a matter of poor design. They're not going to design an all singing, all dancing set for one short programme produced every week, that may well be scrapped soon.
