If only somebody had given you a heads up...

Judging by that live stream and the promo for HardTalk, it seems the next episode might be coming from the VR studio at NBH.

Interesting that they've chosen to recreate TC7 when all the new sets are circular. It would've made more sense to copy the Millbank set since that's the other place the programme regularly comes from.

Has HARDtalk already moved to BH? ...they seem to be using the BH graphics?!?

...the studio looks identical but the floor looks somewhat darker and bluer than usual with no shadows. The ceiling lightbox looks completely fake.

The one currently on iPlayer with Shaun Ley has been done from Westminster studio used for Daily Politics.

EDIT: Oh, I see. This edition is from the new virtual studio in NBH, yes. Lightbox is very very fake!

Is the virtual studio not the same shapes as the others, round? Or can the virtual technology change the spacial awareness to any shape it wants?

It's a green room, the camera has no idea what the physical space is, everything green is replaced, meaning virtually the shape can be any size needed. In this case they've recreated the TC7 Barco layout of the set in the virtual environment.

Clever camera position mapping allows the software to dynamically change the virtual environment to match cameras moves and create the effect of being in a real environment. Personally the ITV News jib shots do this to best effect, the ones seen so far at NBH "look" fake which is never a good start.

Thanks. I guess at some point after World moves into BH they will change the virtual environment to appear more like the other BH studios, and less like TC7. On another note, will Vine be able to do his election analysis from there?

Yes, it's absolutely the intention to use Studio A for VR environment election graphics with Jeremy Vine.

I wouldn't say just the light box looks fake, it all looks pretty fake. You can see the technology in Studio A isn't as advanced as ITN, but then ITN use theirs for flagship bulletins every day.

Yes and I think we should cut BBC News some slack here as ITN have had 8 years of continuous experience at using a VR studio, whereas BBC News has - to their credit - always had real sets. So it'll probably take them some time to get used to the technology on a day-to-day basis. Up until now they've only really used VR for election segments, and most of those have come from ITN anyway!

To be frank though, they are hardly going to spend time on making sure it looks 100% realistic when its basically a virtual recreation of a set that won't be used for very much longer at all.

On the other hand, ITN are using a BBC technology (Free-D) for their VR, but I don't think the BBC are for theirs...

Is it me or is N8 very poorly lit this morning? Seems extremely dark compared to how it usually is.

Is any body able to get a video of the new breakfiller? I haven't been able to see much of it. Cheers
