So when a fire alarm goes off, where does all these channels 'divert' to?

As they are all under one roof

AIUI there are multiple firezones in W1, just as there are at TVC. Therefore if there is a fire alarm (or other evacuation) in one part of the building, another part of the building can continue broadcasting. My understanding is that the studios and galleries are not all in the same firezone.

Thanks

What studio/set is this? It's used from 11am (if not before), on the channel and on BBC Two from 11.30, until GMT comes on.

These are caps I could get from YouTube. I can't find a wider shot of this high round desk and stools. In this wide shot I couldn't find, the set looked small.

The moving background seems to be made of LCD screens. But you can see some sort of background in between.

N9 maybe, or even a smaller set?

That's 'the pod' area of N8. It's a small area, in the same studio the main set for BBC World News is. You'll probably be able to see the newsroom in N8 behind the screens.

Ok - thanks! It's a horrible little place. Will be glad to see the end of it.

I honestly think that BBC World News are gaining the most from the move to BH.

Yes they are loosing the N8 newsroom backdrop, but i think out of the two news channels, World have already shown they can use their studio spaces to their full potential.

Domestic have had plenty of time to show the versitility of N6 and in over four years have probably only changed the led colour for a few brief moments.

Yes domestic are getting what is percieved to be the "better" studio, but I'm not holding my breath that they will do anything innovative with it. Just like when they were in N8 they will get bored of the studio's versitility very quickly and revert to two potted shrubs behind a desk.

Domestic would be better if they followed World's lead and ditched the second presenter.

I disagree. They can only work with the environment they've been given. For many years BBC World was in N9 and had zilch in the way of creativity or versatility. It's only since their move to N8, and even then only since about 2010, that they've been getting more adventurous.

News 24, on the other hand, was doing fairly creative things (for that time) when they were in N8. Don't forget that having been desk-bound for several years before the new 2003 set launched, they started standing up in pods, walking between areas and even venturing out into the newsroom behind. That was pretty adventurous stuff for almost a decade ago.

In recent times, BBC News has been rather stale, but can you really blame them? What on earth can they do in N6? They've sometimes shown full images on the Barcos and occasionally had people standing next to them to do presentations. But what else can they realistically do with a 3-sided box? I'd love to have seen what BBC World would have made of it... very little I imagine. I think you're doing the directors a disservice as they've really not had much to work with.

Well I think both channels will actually have the same presentation once they move to BH cause their main sets are pretty much the same, except for the real newsroom background in News Channel set.
Of course World will use that other set for it's daytime special programs so that will be a bit different.

I think it is the flexibility of NBH which will make both channels rather more creative and dynamic, so everyone will be a winner, since there will be an actual choice of where to broadcast from, given the 4 different studios. BBC World News will use several studios throughout the day, perhaps domestic BBC News - I can't remember. This sounds infinitely better than the current set-up, not forgetting that all the studios all still scream BBC News, so there won't really be a lack of consistency.

But I agree with itsrobert. Among the several valid points he has presented, N6 is fundamentally just a boring, uninspiring place to broadcast from.

Isn't it where BBC News 24 used to do Film 24, the Sport and the studio weather from?

It is, yes.

I would tend to agree with all the points above, people already know my views on the staleness of the News channel. Even Sky News, with the presentation going predominently desk bound now (except Bolton & Co, Sunrise and the paper review) seems far more dynamic and clearer in its presentation with its current look than that of the BBC and in particular, the News channel.

BBC World News do have the flexibility of N8 and in directors terms it may be a better studio space to use, but size wise it doesn't differ too much from that of N6. Mind you, back in 2003 the BBC did employ more staff to run the channels which would mean they could, arguably do more adventurous things as the cutbacks hadn't started.

2003 saw BBC News 24 moving into a new generation of TV News presentation, 2013 will see the same again (hopefully!) Plus, if pres is going to be the same in style across World and the News channel we may have some stood TOTH's and studio movement which would be great to see.

I wouldn't put bets on it but i'd say if the News departments move to BH is great on screen, the News channel will get the News channel of the year award again.
