That started happening when The World Today launched in the 5:00am slot in September 2001. Until that point, the overnight shift used to last until 6:00am, when Breakfast took over on News 24 and the normal news bulletins on BBC World. When TWT filled that slot, they decided to include UK news (and weather back then) during the commercial break. Although, at that time Martine Dennis used to hand over to the overnight newsreader (usually Martine Croxall, Deborah MacKenzie, Heather McCarthy and a few others) who was sat in N8 in order to read the UK headlines.

Watched a UK version of The World Today (as we used to call it) this morning with Martine Dennis. I see they still have that one minute island in the middle where she does a run of UK news stories.
Overseas, we normally opt away for adverts at that point.
Nope, She was with the BBC for a while presenting South Today (or South East Today? Not from that part of the world!) and filling in on the overnights, but moved at some point to present on the ITN/ITV News Channel (possibly as a freelancer?). I don't know where she's been since!
