I'm sure I recall hearing something at the time it was made about it being a model rather than pure computer graphics.

Using models isn't as common as it once was (in the 70's the BBC symbols were just a camera pointed at a model) but it's not something that's gone away, even in feature films

It's not a physical model imho, you can tell from the reflections on the globe.

Just be clear, is everyone saying it's CGI because they know it is, or just because it seems like it probably would be?

It looks like a physical model to me (a better quality video would probably be more obvious either way).

Looks like a physical model shot on film to me, especially noticeable on the final frame it holds on.

Interesting that the logo on that copy is in the 1997 stripped style, the version they used on air was stacked.

Not sure that version ever went on air. The full titles only had 'BBC' on them because the programme had a different name on BBC Four and BBC World. It was when it turned green and called 'The World' that the name of the programme went on the full titles, not just the sting.

That version went out on BBC World, the ones we all remember only went out on BBC Four.

It was definitely a physical model. Even now, CGI can't do glass that well, never mind back in 2002. It always looked so very different to all the CGI stuff that I was seeing elsewhere that it was never in any doubt that it was a physical model.

Going off on a tangent but the green era of BBC Four's news is my favourite BBC News look of recent years.
