Tbh, I thought the Millbank Studio looked really classy for the news. The current studio has been in use for a while now, and if they were to change, a similar look would work very nicely.
If I am not mistaken the screens in millbank are brand new. So they must be fully HD? If so then I guess the reason why the background is fuzzy is because the image/video visual is not of a high quality or upscaled?
I wonder if millbank studio with the big screen is a sign of what a new BBC News studio would look like. I do like the desk but not sure about an all screen studio.
All screen studios aren't bad and allow for more customization. MSNBCs two that meet at a corner allow for a of sets, videos upscaled incredibly well and graphics are made in the walls native resolution.
Clearly but no excuse for a washed out background.
It looks awful.
My thinking is that the videowall is at a significantly higher resolution than the HD recorded footage and isn't upscaling properly. It is also possible that the background loop is the one that's used during CSO news reports during Breakfast and other shows which if I recall correctly is a bit blurred.
I suspect for the 10 they didn’t want a repeat of June 2017 when the system failed just before the 10 and News Channel viewers got 4 minutes of Huw twiddling his thumbs waiting for the go from the gallery. After every headline the Breaking News graphic would appear with sound effect. Fortunatey it happened just before the end of the day, when they could switch over to World News an hour earlier, leaving Rico to give a special welcome to UK viewers. It’s not good if your flagship programme is affected by technical problems. Fortunately, it’s not happened often, I can only remember one other major system failure at NBH, which resulted in Focus on Africa coming from the top of the newsroom where guests have interviews with a studio (other programmes were affected).

I hope not, it'll be like N6 and TC7 all over again!
There was a time where the Millbank studio had a working newsroom around it (Darren Jordan presented an emergency 1:00 news there sometime last decade). Looked far better then than it does now and at the time was an improvement on N6/TC7.
Didn't like the angled shot of Huw but for what it is (an emergency studio) it serves it's purpose incredibly well.
I didn't like that angled shot either, but they didn't have any choice there. The presenter position is in the middle (with screens underneath), that sits very well with the Politics Live background, but not the one they used of the newsroom with that faux balcony.
Perhaps they can come up with a better backdrop for when they decamp to Millbank (either scheduled or in emergency situations such as this) in future.
Did the contingency set-up in the old Daily Politics set ever make it to air? I remember seeing newsreaders standing by in it a couple of times when there were potential issues around W1A and it didn't look great on the wide shots. The new set looks loads better.
