Wauw, is that really HER?! I Mean, Jane Hill looked horrible when I saw her presenting from New Orleans! What happened to her?! She looks pale and black around her eyes.
She says it sometimes feels like being on a film set for some reason I already forgot, but really: where is her make-up artist then?! And her hair: it looked like Katrina blowed over her head.
Back to business: regarding the countdown, wasn't it so that in the previous one, the top of the hour was the point when the '03' disappeared from screen and the shadow of 'BBC World' came up? Because that would mean that the situation hasn't changed and that either the new nor the old countdown actually finishes at the TOTH.
Oh and why does so much go wrong on BBC World? I will spare you a summary but just at this moment, all the graphics disappeared from screen during a report and for 20-30 seconds, there was no sound. Compared to CNN, BBC World looks bad in sense of presentation failures.

I guess it is all intended at making the scene appear more dramatic. Remember Jon Sopel looked very bad too, sweating, tired and not well shaven.lool
As for the hair, I guess the damp weather explains it all. Unless there's somebody to fix her hair every half hour, there's no way it can remain properly styled in such a hot and humid location. Same for the make up: it has melted as a result of her sweating. I assume there is no make-up artist standing alongside in the flooded street.

No, with the previous countdown, the top of the hour was the very last bip just after the voiceover said "Putting news first". It was immediately followed by the headline bang and the presenter saying "This is BBC News from BBCWorld". The situation has certainly changed because although the last gigits of the countdown weren't shown, you could still clearly hear the three remaining bips. Accordingly the countdown really lead to something substancial, whereas now it doesn't mean anything any more.

I saw that too and I deplore it. But seemingly the BBC has been busy cutting cost during the last few years. And it is true that those problems are particularly frequent, owing to understaffing. They should wake up and realize it is of no use changing studio designs every few months as long as those technical problems are not properly dealt with. It does more damage to the channel's reputation than new studio designs upgrade its image. They ought to spend money in a way that significantly improves the quality of the channel, rather than focusing on attracting new viewers with new studios...
I think the new breakfiller music is brilliant, but I don't like the new countdown: the music is not that good, those red flashes with sound effects are ridiculous, they are more suited for Power Rangers or Star Wars than for BBC World and the BBC World logo at the end is really awful.
Not to mention the new weather sting: graphics are terrible, the music is so bad that is unbearable. I'm sure they will soon realize that broadcasting such a dreadful thing is a huge mistake.
out of interest - is it the whooshes that put you off as i find the laser things on the n24 countdown less tacky looking as it;s music doesn't have the swoosh noise
It obviously sounded different to what I'm used to (only being treated to BBC World for the week or so that I'm away on holiday each year) but I think it works combining, IMO, the two best countdown musics - the old World countdown music and the current N24 music. The only annoying thing is that damn woman: 'This is BBC World, Putting News First' as it really does ruin it.
In response to a post about the exact point of the TOTH, I agree with the point as I think having a countdown which finishes 5secs before is pointless especially when it has no definite end as the case is with the countdown now.

No make up artist. No make up. No hair stylist. No hair products.
You guys need to get real about what it's like reporting in a warzone.

Have to agree - New Orleans is probably worse than some warzones at the moment. remember no running water, no power etc. The BBC team are sleeping on a bus ... there are no hotels etc ... it's very hot and humid ...
I've just realized that in the new countdown, the deciseconds and centiseconds are not counted down properly. For instance what immediately follows 16:00 is 15:24 and then the centiseconds stream down normally till it gets to 15:00, with 14:24 coming next, and so on. I had certainly noted prior to my discovering it that the decisecond stream was slower than the usual as can be seen on a watch, but I didn't imagine they'd cheated that way to slow it down...
I noticed that some 50-minute-long programmes are shown all over the world except in Canada. Does anyone know what Canadian viewers get instead of those programmes?
As bbcworld2005 mentioned above, I did contact them about this. The reason why certain programmes are not screened in Canada is purely down to programme rights issues. Our main network here, the CBC has a very strong relationship with the BBC and often collaborate with them on documentary projects or simply purchase the rights to air them here. When that occurs, the CBC asks BBC World not screen the programmes on the Canadian feed.
Every year, the presenter rota seems to change and I wonder who will be replacing Mike Embley in London and Katty in Washington.
No offense, but they're quite bland. I hope they send Adrian to DC. He would attract so many more viewers or for diversity, you could go with George Alagiah.
