is that the countdown does not end at the top of the hour

I agree. There's about 5 seconds between when the figures reach 00 :00 and the headline bang. So, let's say, when there's 10 seconds left on the countdown, its actually 15. It's not as accurate as the others.

I don't think anyone need worry about a few seconds, when you are talking about a global broadcast, using several different satellites!

A think that I diskike in the new countdown, is that the countdown does not end at the top of the hour, like it used to be the case with the previous two ones. It leads to those two or three seconds during which appear the logo and slogan of the channel, with that voiceover saying "This is BBC World - Putting news first". The previous one didn't get to 00 - it ended at 02 - but we still had the sounds of the remaining two seconds. Now the voiceover drowns them and the 00:00 doesn't mean anything, but that you're pretty closed to the very top of the hour.
It used to be easier adjusting one's watch...

well as has been said world isn't ideal for adjusting your watch owing to the number of things it needs to bounce off first.

also the old 2000 ten second into ident countdown never lined up either.

I'm looking forward to seeing this new countdown next time I am travelling. It sounds pretty cool and it's reassuring that BBC World thinks these things are as important as we do. Does anyone treat the countdown as exact seconds to the hour though? I thought it was just a way of adding tension and keeping people watching until the news came back on

That is a nice new countdown there, its a clear mix of the N24 one , I think the extra sounds give it extra diemsion

1.Was the BBC News Special from New Orleans with George Alegiah also broadcast on BBC news24? I noticed George said at the end of the programme the 10 o'clock news were next.
2. Gosh, what happened to the transatlantic edition of the WBR??
3. Did you see that 50 second-long countdown? Has there been one longer prior to this one?

I thought that although they have a global distribution, they had fixed it up and managed to synchronize the thing so that the end of the countdown is aired with accuracy at the precise top of the hour. I certainly had noted it was of exactly one second ahead of the BBC Radio bips, but I trusted BBC World.

In fact I got convinced the countdown to the new hour was accurate at the time I started watching World extensively, in 2000. The BBC News sting then was very impressive, with all those city names appearing and so forth and I said unto myself: "This is a channel that is dedicated to sheer professionalism: hourly bulletins, well synchronised work in the newsroom, a global perspective. At the very least they must have committed themselves to starting the news precisely on time, and so the countdown must reflect with accuracy the seconds left before the new hour begins."

Hmm, interesting 47 second countdown just now, also this time yesterday it was 41 seconds so it may be best to watch at this toth for a long countdown!

I think the new breakfiller music is brilliant, but I don't like the new countdown: the music is not that good, those red flashes with sound effects are ridiculous, they are more suited for Power Rangers or Star Wars than for BBC World and the BBC World logo at the end is really awful.
Not to mention the new weather sting: graphics are terrible, the music is so bad that is unbearable. I'm sure they will soon realize that broadcasting such a dreadful thing is a huge mistake.

I noticed that some 50-minute-long programmes are shown all over the world except in Canada. Does anyone know what Canadian viewers get instead of those programmes?

They seemed to get regular programmes like us according to the schedule. I was thinking maybe the simulcast on CBC NewsWorld mght have affected the schedule... Laughing
