Yes, adverts! That's interesting (and I'm not taking the pi55 honest!)
BBC World is governed by ITC regulations, or whatever they're called these days. IIRC, adverts cannot be shown within 30seconds of religious content being aired.
BBC World isn't broadcast in the UK so I don't think any ITC rules apply. And I'm pretty sure that the rule you state may have been misinterpreted; there's religious programming interspersed with adverts all the time on commerical terrestrial channels...
Indeed, Adrian Finighan is usually on during the weekend evenings, and he would have been much better than Anya last night. I was surprised they didn't bring Nik Gowing in, to be honest. They usually do in these circumstances. The only reason I can think of is that most of the coverage was shared with News 24, so there wasn't a great deal for the on duty N9 presenter to do.
Indeed, in my opinion coverage on BBC World today has been substandard. I can understand that sharing output with News 24 makes sense, but the way in which they handled it was just plain annoying: joining and leaving News 24 mid-sentence, opening titles that clash with TOG, breakfast titles being shown around the globe, more than a reasonable number of cuts to the wrong feed, etc.
But worse of all, in the few moments they produced from the World newsroom they failed to make a real contribution with hardly any in-depth analysis or interviews. Exceptional circumstances demand exceptional people and although I greatly respect Lucy and Anya, I feel that Nik, Mike, Adrian or Lyse should have taken over, even if the majority of output was simulcast.
Indeed, what I found really disappointing was that the coverage from the newsroom has been superficial and lacking of live coverage from St. Peter Square. Anyway, I think that Lucy Hockings has done well, she has been brilliant and let us watch some live pictures from St.Peter Square without making a useless and annoying description of what we were seeing. Quite impressive to me.
Could you please tell me who announced the death of the pope on BBC World? Was it Anya Sitaram? You know, a video capture wuold be sooooo appreciate.
Thanks.

I have nothing against Anya Sitaram and I don't know how she handled the situation because I wasn't watching but... On Saturday morning we saw Lucy Hockings and in the afternoon Nisha Pillai and Mishal Husain (who are not usually on air during the weekends ), so why not continue with an expert broadcaster in the evening as well? Shame that Adrian Finighan and Mike Embley (who, in my opinion, is the best presenter on World) have never been on air in the last few days... I don't think that Anya is a bad presenter, but when the news is so important I would like to see the best broadcasters in the newsroom...

Yet, Anya Sitaram found herself announcing the death of the pope to the world. Hope she handled the situation well...
Anya did very well
Bear in mind that there was no warning of the final announcment. It could have come anytime over the weekend or even into next week. Everyone was assuming they the death would be announced in a press statement. In fact it was announced on Vatican radio. As soon as it was confirmed by two sources it was broken by Anya.
Anya did do well yes, but I feel the coverage would have been better had a more experienced presenter been on duty. The Pope's death was imminent, and Nik Gowing ought to have been called in.
However, what is more concerning is the poor technical standard that BBC World exhibited yesterday. As Tim said, there were lots of technical glitches, including titles failing, incorrect text being displayed on the titles (at one point it had a load of rubbish flying round the globe), poor cuts into and out of N24 coverage. At one point this morning, World fell off the air during the break filler. It eventually came back, cut to a live view of the Vatican, then to 2 seconds of countdown, followed by the breakdown slide and music, before hastily cutting into N24 mid-sentence. Throughout yesterday, towers were coming on, going off, coming on again. That happened several times. A few years ago, BBC World was very well organised and was a reputable news channel. These days, however, it's onscreen standards seem to be slipping.

Did BBC World put the pope death's astons during the recorded programme like News24? Quite tasteless to me to let the audience know that the pope has died while Stephen Cole is smiling and reminding you of the email address of ClickOnline...

But it has been imminent for the past week. It could have gone on another week. Nik can't move into the building.

Well it always used to be that you would never break the news of a death with just an aston. But things have changed. I agree incredibly tasteless.
BBC World broke into the break with a sting and then Anya broke the news before talking over pictures from St Peters square. World then joined Brian who was broadcasting on News24

I think it was pretty clear by early yesterday afternoon that he was going to die before the end of the day. Before I went out last night, I said to a friend that the Pope would be dead by the time we got home. And I was right.
Granted, Nik can't live in the building. However, he was called in quickly enough when Diana died and when Saddam Hussein was captured. Those news stories came out of the blue, so with the Pope's death, which was imminent, there really was no excuse.

And they said he would die before the end of the day on Thursday and then on Friday.
No one was expecting such a rapid announcment on Saturday. It was thought that there would be warning of an statement coming. In the end it was flashed on vatican radio. It was on air two minutes later.

Nik Gowing was also called in on December 26th, when he presented for some hours in the evning instead of Anya Sitaram...

If they need a reliever which is likely she has been doing during the week why not give us Adrian for crying out loud! and give Adrian fridays on TWT not Lucy... I just dont like her anymore and she swings round to much.

I like Lucy Hockings, I thinks she has a good pace and looks extremely at ease in front of the camera. The only thing that bores me a little is her odd smile and swinging at the end of almost each bulletin... except that she's a good broadcaster IMO.

BBC World is
broadcast from
the UK, so must follow their rules (now OFCOM obviously)
Just had a quick look at the OFCOM site though, and yes, it looks like they have changed the rules on Religious broadcasting. It just says Broadcasters can't advertise alcoholic drinks containing 1.2 per cent alcohol or more by volume
