no it does not need light and it does not need "BBC News Tonight".

How about "BBC World Nightly News Tonight at Ten with Huw Edwards". Radio Times would love that!

Yes, it would be a lot better for Newsnight, than the current set, which is, IMO, out of date.

It's still so new (relatively speaking) that Scotland has only just got it's version following the long awaited Glasgow studio refresh.

Yes, the new Washington set has proved to be very effective -- it seems it has been a worthwhile investment for the BBC. If they hadn't replaced it before the election, we'd have now been watching that cream and red set -- quite magnificent in c.2000-2002 -- but it was becoming increasingly out of date.

On the subject of Newsnight, how long is it now since they adopted the current purple look and set?

Newsnight was only revamped in late 2002. I guess this was shortly after the demise of the nations opt (except Scotland).

Probably a dumb question, but is that a genuine view out of a real window or is it just a projection? What with Sky News', if it's a real window, they must be practically on top of each other!

It;s unlikely, they'd almost certainly not be able to get a studio into a building that close. Sky and BBC probably use the same camera feed.

They're projections. The White House and Capitol Hill aren't that close, nor are they geographically aligned as depicted in the views from the studio.
