I wish there was one like that with London in the background.

Yes, it would be a lot better for Newsnight, than the current set, which is, IMO, out of date.

It's not really out of date at all. This is just the default reason that TV Forumites give because they want everything to change every few days. Newsnight is content-driven; it's not about the style of the show, so it's not critical to its longevity that it keeps up with every fad of the day. Of course shows like Newsnight need periodic updates to their presentation, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it at the moment, and it certainly isn't out of date.

The only change to reasonably expect in the foreseeable future is minor graphics tweaks to introduce Swiss in place of Gill Sans.

Emmmm, I don't want sets to change all the time. I just think the NN set looks tired .... ok, maybe not out of date, but I think the studio needs a lot more lighting.

The lighting suits the content and style of the show. It's analytical, it's focused, it's sharp. It doesn't warrant a Breakfast-style sofa and light pouring over everything; it doesn't require an illuminated desk that looks like a supermarket freezer as is the current fashion on BBC News; it doesn't need people walking around a bright white and red set (N24), standing awkwardly next to a breakfast bar (LONDON), perching behind a futuristic ironing board (East Midlands Today), or sitting in a pimped out cocktail lounge (Points West).

It was nice to see Newsnight in the Washington studio, certainly - but I think it only served to reinforce my assertion that that kind of bright setting doesn't sit at all well with the 'ethos' of Newsnight; it just completely at odds with the mood of the programme.

You think it's out of date - fair enough, I respect your opinion. But I say there's absolutely no point in changing something that is perfectly acceptable for the purpose that it serves, especially when the kind of people who watch Newsnight do so for its content, and aren't all that bothered that it isn't the height of news chic.

And now for something completely different, and back on topic - another picture of the Washington studio:

I think BBC News Tonight (as I would rename it) needs to be more 'open', it is enclosed in a small circle thing and it has horrible music.

Just as well nobody cares what you think then, least of all the Newsnight team.

You don't just "modernise" Newsnight...it's practically an institution.

It's like those stories that Panorama is going to be dumbed down into a 30minutes lightweight programme.....it just cannot happen.

Please don't ever accept a job in the media industry. Ever.

no it does not need light and it does not need "BBC News Tonight".

Anyon who could suggest the latter is clearly a moron with no idea what news shows are actually for, they aren't just there to put fancy desks and ironing boards on you know.

I agree with BBC LDN and Hymagumba, it is the content of the programme that counts, but I also believe the set counts.

And when I said more lighting, I didn't mean it to look like Breakfast, with a sofa.

But...but...but...

Don't you just love the idea of Jeremy Paxman ironing some shirts while reviewing the next day's newspapers?

No, I'd far prefer it if he did what he's always wanted to do, grap ahold of someone by the lapels and demonstrate a new type of 'hard interviewing style'.

While pouring a bottle of Lenor into the washing machine and wearing a pink pinny.

Not quite sure whether it would look right on Gavin though, might need a kind of bonnet for him.

Probably going to get lambasted for this, but I thought the idea of this new subforum was that the revealing of new sets wasn't done in the middle of a 30 page "BBC World- Making Sense of It All" thread....this incidentally has been overtaken by the speculation about the new London set, so this thread is needed.

Anyway, enough justifying- these are BBC LDN's captures- not great quality but that new set is....in fact why don't I just quote BBC LDN's observations:

"Two-way
Note of course the plasma screen for two-ways, but also a view I hadn't seen before this evening with N24-style red perspex showing a newsroom-esque view beyond it. Well people could be seen milling about behind it anyway.

New panel insert
Where previously there was just a red panel, there now sits a US ELECTION 2004 panel, seen here between Jon Sopel and the guest. Reminds me of the panel inserts that were briefly introduced when they updated the ivory/China red 1999 era National studio.

...and finally
For anyone who hasn't seen the studio in full, here's a wide shot. Again, my apologies for the image quality. The 'view' out of the left 'windows' is towards Capitol Hill; the right looks out over the White House.

"

All rights reserved BBC LDN etc

Anyway- my observations....excellent use of larger screens behind really opens up the studio....love the first cap showing some of the newsroom behind red perspex., providing continuity with News 24.

And the third cap is very impressive....this really is the first example of a UK broadcaster having what I would class as a "proper" studio-space outside of the UK and Ireland- a studio designed to tie in with the London base but sufficient in size to not look like an office space (i.e. the old studio).

Pretty good effort I feel.

Very kind of you. Though as I think I mentioned in the BBC WORLD thread - where I originally posted those pics, and made those comments - they were taken with my phone camera (Orange SPV C500 Windows Smartphone, for those taking notes).
