In Febuary 2004, ITV News spent up to 1million pounds on a revolutionary studio design that was set to give viewers a 'theatre of news' Using CSO or green screen which projects a faint image onto a material.
Two years later, in May 2006 BBC ONE News relaunched there set, using LED screens. The set is used for Breakfast, 1, 6 & 10.
Both sets have their flaws but I feel the ITV News studio has stood the test of time (so far!) It has been used for a rolling news station and also for one hour bulletins on ITV1 sufficiently. They seem to use the same shots all the time now and has calmed down from the original bizarre shots. It is also great to see the various angles used in the ITV Lunchtime news around the advert breaks.
Both studios are quite cold in appearance and the whole general feeling. The current BBC 1 studios seems very empty and dont particularly lend themselves to interviews on the set very well. It all seems to revolve around the presenter now rather than the news! Whereas ITV news can still have studio guests and do all the other stuff.
I have noticed that ITV News dont seem to use their virtual studio lately - used mainly for The Briefing and Lawrence Mcginty stories. I used to love their use of this, especially for space stories!
Overall, If I had to choose, ITV News studios are more flexible and at the touch of a button the whole 'set' can be changed virtually and with some lighting changes. The BBC Studio just doesnt do much for me.
I feel the same about it, I cant warm to the BBC set, ITV make good use of the space, shame they dont use diffrent shots but sometime you do, I remember in 2004 that the endings would drag on for about a minute, because the headline bed would play for a couple of seconds before the ending music.
I find both the ITV and regional news to be more friendly and accessable than it's BBC conterparts. But it could be improved by putting the names back into the bulletin's titles. e.g. ITV Lunchtime News, ITV Evening News etc etc and by giving the regions back control of their bullitin times and let them decide what their viewers want, not what someone in London thinks the viewers in say Devon want. The companies used to exist to serve their local viewers. Something ITV seem to have forgotton somewhere along the line. That was part of ITV's popularity, they just don't seem to recognize this now.
I just wish the Beeb wouldn't use theirs for the weather at the bottom of the Six.
I get so drawn to the little white lines between the panels and the horrible brightness differences between them that I never get round to looking at the map properly and have to ask 'er indoors, afterwards, what the forecast was.
At least the ITV one doesn't (appear to) have any joins.

You're absolutely right!
You can see the lines in between the panels and on occasion some screens appear brighter than others. I was watching the weather on the One O'Clock News and it just looked poor. The screens in TC7 where Newsnight & Newsround come from are much better.
