The graphic design of the CRV rendered graphic elements, the DVE tracked to the CRV for animation, the DVE "bevelled edge glass" wipes, and the design of the inset graphics, were cleverly harmonised, so that lots of different bits of kit and techniques could be used to achieve something that appeared to be a single, simple look.

Sorry to come across as stupid, but remind me what CRV and DVE stand for.

Have a look at pages 8 - 10 of: http://www.bbceng.info/Eng_Inf/EngInf_53.pdf

Is there any way I can download this pdf file again? I downloaded it, but reformatted my PC and forgot to save it.

This is probably the best example of an RTE production being "inspired by" [translation : stolen from] the BBC :

Except that the perspective doesn't look quite right on that shot, does it? Maybe it was better off-air?

Oh dear God! I remember that. It was atrociously hideous. The backdrop looked like a corkboard that was painted teal. Ugh.

A young Terri Stiasny (now BBC political correspondent) on the right there if I'm not mistaken.

So if the presenter moved his shoulder to the right, it would disappear?

Yes - and it did on occasions. I

DVE = Digital Video Effects. It is/was a tradename but is often used as the generic term for a device that can shrink, zoom, move etc. one or more video pictures around the screen.

Not sure what CRV stands for - it was the model number pre-fix for a range of Sony Recordable Laserdisc recorders and players. It may have stood for Component Recorded Video - as they were component video devices.

CRVs were also used to replay the BBC One globe and the first generation of BBC Two "2" idents in the early 1990s, both in network and the nations and regions. Many regions also burned their local news titles onto the CRVs as well.

Something I noticed was that the daytime set was used on Bank Holidays such as Christmas Day and New Years Day for the late bulletins (at around 10pm). Why was this when the night set was used for the nine o'clock news and the late bulletins on Saturdays and Sundays also of around 10pm?
