BBC News at Six and Reporting Scotland could be replaced by an hour-long Scottish Six .

Pilots won't be on air it seems but this is easily the biggest chance of this plan talked about for many years to get off the ground.

STV were going to try and do this and pair up with ITN, but the Tories kyboshed it...

I do get the impression that this is wanted more by politicans and a few media folk than Scottish viewers themselves - has anyone got the stats for how the Six o'clock News rates in Scotland in comparison to the rest of the UK?

I do think as well as Scottish Ten would be the better option - a one-hour 6pm show is asking alot of it's audience.

A Scottish Ten I think would be a sensible option and then you don't need Scotland 2016.

Well, if that's asking a lot, then how do you view one of the current trends in the US local news market right now, with the evening local newscast block now beginning at 4pm, and not 5pm? 2.5 - 3 hours of local news, every weekday. Is that asking a lot?

It's not irrelevant, it's the same idea. Local, national and international news reported by the local team. Do you dismiss it because it is America? How about the fact this is also done in Canada, and Australia, and many other countries?

How many national news programmes in the US are an hour of unrepeated content?

The PBS Newshour. But you're trying to compare apples with oranges. The Scottish Six is basically the same as your standard 'local' news programmes in the US, Canada, Australia etc. Yes, Scotland is a nation, but in broadcasting terms, it's a national region, hence the comparison with local news programmes not national ones.

Can you find one where you get an hour of unrepeated state-wide, national, and international quality journalism?

Sorry, did you just ask whether I could find a national news programme in the US that covers state-wide news??? Rolling Eyes

If you want to find something comparable to what the Scottish Six would be, then let me point you in a few directions.

Most hour long US local evening news bulletins, The 6pm NewsHour's on Global TV stations in Canada, Hour long CTV local news programming, The 6pm news on Seven Network and Nine Network in Australia, and this country, the closest equivalents are An La on BBC Alba, and Newyddion on S4C, but neither of those are one hour.

In those bulletins, at most, you'll find only the weather repeated. The news stories will not be repeated ala BBC News Channel.

It might help your understanding to actually watch a few of these.

It's not that different in concept from BBC Local Radio which balances national and local news, all presented locally (rather than the IRN followed by local bit model many independent stations used to follow)

This does seem to be opening the floodgates though - many English regions serve a population that is larger than BBC Scotland's patch. Why shouldn't we expect our local region to get sufficient funding to be able to do a full hour too?
