The DTL/Late News studio in Glasgow has been updated with a full size Barco screen replacing the 'BBC NEWS Scotland' backing. The roller blind backgrounds are still there though.

It's been like that for a while.

I visited on Wednesday with Jackie so I'm not sure when it was changed, just that it had changed.

It was never a Barco cube system. That's a very overused and mostly incorrect term thrown around in here. It used to be a large plasma, now it is a large projector. Either way, that's not where you saw Jackie on Wednesday.

The late bulletin after the 10pm news is done from the main studio now. As it's sometimes the only Scottish news a large proportion of working adults catch, it was decided that it should reflect higher production standards, and so has a greater range of shots including moving camera shots, as well as increased use of graphics.

So, how is the Newsnight Scotland 10:30-ish headline insert done nowadays?

I'm sorry I don't know. If I had to guess I would say its recorded.

When we walked round, that's what she said. Something along the lines of 'This is where I usually do the update after the Ten O'clock News' before jumping onto the platform and showing us the foot pedal controlled autocue. Then she jumped off the other side and said something like 'So glamorous - the background is actually a roller blind, but nowadays it is usually on the screen.'

We approached the studio from the stairs on 'The Street' and walked towards it. As we neared it, Jackie said something along the lines of 'This is where I usually do the update after the Ten O'clock News' before jumping onto the platform, sitting down and showing us the foot pedal controlled autocue. Then she turned to the left and got out of the seat and said something like 'So glamorous - the background is actually a roller blind, but nowadays it is usually on the screen.' and operated the roller blind, leaving it down and then we proceeded to Studio C to watch Politics Scotland being recorded.

As you can just about make out from the below photo (from 2009), at the top of the backing wall of the newsroom camera position, there are a couple of roller blinds. One of them has a shot of the Science Centre (with Pacific Quay in the background), and the other is either Glasgow by night or just plain green. More often than not they'll just use the big screen, either with a live view or a recording from the roof cameras. Without wanting to contradict dear old Jackie, I'm not sure I've ever seen the roller blind used for a live bulletin - though you will occasionally see it used for a down-the-line interview, particularly when there isn't anyone technical around to rack the roof camera.

aha! makes more sense in a picture.

the Dundee DTL blind is magnificent. Not only is it a bizarre angle to hide the redevelopment but there's a nice crease in it just to emphasise what it is.
