Nothing on the ITV, STV or UTV Press Release webpages talking about equivalent ratings for their regional news programmes so far, nor the usual sources such as MediaGuardian.

What would be interesting to see is if the reason for the differences is because ITV regional news programmes get higher ratings or whether regional news is not watched as much in certain areas as others.

There are other factors, in London for example people tend to get home later than the rest of the country so the later the regional news the better. This was why in it's later years Thames News moved from 6 to 6:30, with Home and Away at 6 when most other regions had the opposite.

I doubt the ratings of the ITV equivalents is that relevant as they aren't head to head any more

ITV Central cannot be compared to their BBC show. Not when is stretches from Gloucester to Lincolnshire. It's a stupid size of a region. And they try and compensate by focusing on stories that connects to old 2 sub regions together like Derby and Leicester all the time. Embarrasing.

I agree, they also put the East Midlands first on all travel bulletins, going into detail like "LEICESTER" "DERBY" "NOTTINGHAM" then a final "WEST MIDLANDS" slide, covering anywhere from Gloucester to Stoke.

Are Leeds and Hull reported together for easy comparison with Calendar?

Interesting that Look North Newcastle gets such poor ratings given how shoddy Tyne Tees & Boredom's ridiculous show has become. Back in the days of Mike Neville I could understand but these days, not so sure why.

Indeed, can anyone post Tyne Tees' ratings for the same day or the average figures between the two?

No sadly its more to do with laziness, or tight fistedness depending on your point of view Very Happy They won't pay to split the original region as it would cost too much. Though the two areas have separate management it is effectively one region with a very big opt out. They share text/red button services based at Leeds as is Inside out & regional commissions tend to come from there. Since there is no money to do some reconsiliation East Yorks & Lincs in stuck with the fudge. It's A good lesson in not how to create a region.

Interestingly Calendar is becoming more popular as it covers the whole region. Wezzies living in Leeds want to hear the news from Bridlington where they have their caravans Smile Surveys suggest (preumably since many west riding folk retire to Brid) they want news of what's happening where their families live. Likewise (so the complaints go) anyone living north of the Humber isn't interested in happenings in Kings Lynn. The last controller of the larger region, Colin Philpott, said 'the only thing that EY&Lincs has in common was a transmitter. I believe he is still the director of the National Film, Photography & TV museum in Bradford.

Perhaps, but surely logically you wouldn't watch Granada Reports and then North West Tonight would you, in the same way you're unlikely to watch the six o'clock news and then ITV News...?

Interesting breakdown. I know Spotlight has always been very popular (look at that share!)

Also interesting that some of the top ranking regions are the regions that don't really exist separately in ITV terms (No Westcountry, Central News East or Meridian East full shows any more), whereas the regions with lower shares DO have much more direct ITV equivalents (ITV London, ITV Wales, Granada etc.)

Little surprise to me that BBC EMT comes near the top. Ironically the BBC launched that service in 1992, to compete with ITV Central, who had established Central East in 1984-- which was beating BBC Midlands Today in the ratings in the Waltham tx area back then.

What ITV suits in London didn't seem to realise in 2005, is that the Midlands isn't Birmingham and surrounding areas; rather the East Midlands and West Midlands are entirely different entities. Geo-politicially, culturally and so on. The BBC continue to realise this, hence the success of EMT. People round my way aren't interested in hearing what's going on in Dudley, or what Aston Villa has been up to (nothing wrong with Villa or Dudley by the way Laughing )

No, (although people probably would when there's a story that concerns their locale) but that's not the point.

When some were head to head the audience who wanted regional news had to choose between the two so there was a correlation. Now timeslot as well as other factors will have a lot to do with it... that extra half an hour does make a difference

I'm not arguing there is a massive difference, but they still affect each other, even though they're no head to head.
