Discussion of news programmes across network BBC Radio

I tried to find a BBC Radio topic but sadly couldn't find one - so I hope this new thread isn't deemed unnecessary!

Plenty of discussion to be had about network BBC Radio at the moment. This could be a great topic to focus on Newsbeat, Radio 4's Today, World at One, PM and The World Tonight, and 5 Live.

Big news this morning about 5 Live's Emma Barnett, who's moving to Radio 4 to host Woman's Hour. She'll continue on Newsnight but this does mean the end of her mid-morning slot on 5 Live.

I think it's a fairly unsurprising move, given Emma's recent rise to stardom. She'll be a great addition to Woman's Hour but obviously has fairly big shoes to fill. Not sure who could replace her on 5 Live - who is the next big political journalist, I wonder?

Broadcaster Emma Barnett will be the new presenter of Woman's Hour.

The 5 Live and Newsnight presenter will step into the shoes of Jane Garvey and Dame Jenni Murray, who have both decided to step down from the show.

Barnett is already associated with the Radio 4 programme, presenting its late-night spin-off and regularly chairing the Woman's Hour Power List.

I wonder if Adrian Chiles might replace her and someone else takes his Friday show?

It used to be Victoria Derbyshire's slot so doesn't have to be a political journalist

Yeah it's a news and current affairs slot, the fact Emma did a lot of politics is probably a lot due to the time during which she occupied it!

Woman's Hour is a great gig to have but I do think it's a shame she didn't move to Today or something as newsy. She's staying on Newsnight though which is good

I'm really surprised Jane Garvey left. I wonder if they wanted to bring Emma in and demote her to Friday/Saturday? Still she's getting her own show and a better profile for Fortunately alongside the much underused Fi Glover

I doubt it. I suspect it'll be used (either directly or indirectly) as an opportunity to reduce 5 live drive to single headed presentation.

Nihal has confirmed he’s just signed a new 2 year contract with 5 Live, so it seems like there might be a few changes coming up if these discussions are happening.

A few months ago I’d have said Naga Munchetty would be the obvious choice to replace Emma Barnett but I’m not sure now. With all the talk of “left wing bias” blah blah blah I wouldn’t be surprised if they went for somebody like Julia Hartley-Brewer as a token “look, we’re not all lefties” move.

It’s not the BBCs job to have left or right wing presenters. They’re all required to be impartial. If you would like broadcasting to come from a particular angle there are other stations for that. The new DG is placing a massive emphasis on impartiality.

If the ever increasing newspaper articles are to be believed regarding Naga's external activities, I don't think the incoming DG is going to be too impressed.....
