North West Tonight reporters taking over the national news this evening - Nina Warhurst and Stuart Flinders both filing reports, neither of which in the north west area.

Is Stuart still with North West Tonight? He's been appearing around the country as a 'News Correspondent' on the BBC News Channel and weekend network news for the last few months.

I'm sure I saw him on NWT last week.

Roger Johnson interviewed Derek Hatton tonight. I say 'interviewed'... more like asking one question and giving Hatton a 5 minute platform to crucify the BBCs reporting of '30 years on from Militant Scousers'.
Poor Roger, he could not a single word in, and had to defend the programme's reporting this week. Cringeworthy and car crash TV.
At the end of the programme Roger thanked viewers for all the emails which came in after the interview with 'our studio guest' and said they had made him smile.

I think Derek Hatton came across much worse to be honest.

There are certain words I could use here to describe Derek Hatton, but they'd never get past the forum swear filter!

Oh my goodness, few would have coped well with that, perhaps Roger should have been better prepared for Hatton's rant, but it really needed Jon Snow or someone of similar experience and calibre.

When Roger tries to tell him to be quiet at the end, could the sound guys not have turned the mic down?

Got to be careful with that, you often hear people ranting away on radio programmes, and I often wonder
why not just fade them out (particularly if they are in a remote studio, or on the phone), but I suspect they
could take action over being censored in an extreme case ?

What action? There's no law against turning someone's microphone off - particularly if they've been ranting for the last five minutes or so. The right to free speech (which isn't properly defined in the British constitution anyway) doesn't give you the right to just spout any old nonsense on the public airwaves.

Worth noting that this morning it's Gordon Burns' final radio show on BBC Manchester and BBC Lancashire, so he pretty much retires from broadcasting today.

Yes, he was saying on Twitter that he wanted his weekends back, which is fair enough. He'll still be around MediaCityUK though, because he does media training and consultancy, but in effect, Gordon won't be broadcasting anymore on either TV or radio.
