"In a couple of weeks Stuart will be a regular presenter in the studio, he will present the Friday NWT from 14th September onwards, alongside Kate Simms."

Where did you hear this PhilipD??

you seem pretty sure, do you have a mole on the inside??

I actually might be wrong about it, I read it on wikipedia and prior to that there was a rumour that Gordon/Ranvir would present most nights, with Stuart/Annabel on the Friday.

I've heard Annabel Tiffin now only works part time on NWT, that might be why Kate Simms is 'set to' present on Fridays. Wikipedia isn't always reliable, so it's not 100% corerect.

The initial rumour of Gordon and Ranvir is pretty accurate info if you know what I mean.

North West Tonight and what was BBC GMR used to be based in the front of the BBC building on Oxford Road together.

Actually that was where both newsrooms were previously based, the TV studio where the actual North West Tonight programme comes from is still where it has been for 26 years. Its at the back of the building (when looking from Oxford Road.)

I never said the TV studio was at the front of the building, just the newsrooms when NWT and the Old GMR shared the newsroom

North West Tonight have one studio, like other BBC TV centres, they no longer self opt.

To clear up a few inaccuracies, there is only one studio but two galleries, the smaller one just needs a director who controls both the sound and vision and is used for breakfast and weekend bulletins, where there are normally no live or studio guests that would need separate mixing.

No BBC regional studios ever had the ability to self-opt, its always been handed to the studio from the local communications centre, though in some regions, the control might have been in the same area. This is to prevent leaving a mixer permanently live, as this would make maintenance very difficult.

What I meant by self opt` was the newsreader/presenter controlling mics, astons, stills, carts etc... vision mixing.

Apologies for the misunderstanding on studio self-operating, I got on the wrong tack.

However, though it wasnt you, there was someone who thought there were several studios where North West Today/Tonight could come from, (which hasn't been true for about 3 years since the self-op studio closed) which led to me thinking you meant that in your post about the old combined newsroom.

Is the second gallery the old self-op studio?

I think I'm right in saying that the last centre to use a Self-Op desk was the old Leeds building, and they used it right up until the building's closure. ISTR a piece in Arial about what a presenter's nightmare it was! Certainly I've heard stories from other presenters who've used such desks for bulletins and none of them have had particularly fond memories! The one in Bristol apparently used to be capable of little more than opting in and out of network, cutting between presenter in vision, stills and presentation items like the clock and the globe.

Nope, the second gallery is the Regional Graphics Suite. It's fairly small but packed full of some great kit. Far too small to be used as a studio, big enough to squeeze several technical operators into though. The gallery is literally a one man show, about a quarter of the size of the main gallery the director does everything with the help of the Big Ted system for countouts, cues, etc. Razz

Both North West Tonight control rooms control the opt-out, the director controls the opt for morning and weekends and the Technical Manager controls the opt for the main bulletins. The communications centre (CTA) assign which control suite has the ability to control the opt but after that, the rest is done from the control room.

Hardly surprising given that their original function was as pres suites though.

Ranvir presenting again today a very good programme she presneted too!! Gordon must be having a long weekend!!!!
I wonder how the new look will be I watched BBC London and their studios changed since i saw it last they have a big red coffee table and a leather chair with a big tv screen behind very professional but probably not the look we will get especially as there will be 2 presenters. The studio was quite nice though and the opening credits were quite dramatic but i do like our current titles though!!

Is it me or has the floor changed in the studio? It seems to have gone black, when before it was a wood effect.

I know there is a revamp coming next month, could it be a step?
