For example, they're in a temp office if I remember right. I couldn't say why there is a black floor.
Why are they in a temporary office? Where is it?
It's still at BBC Manchester but quite a distance away from the NWT studio - it's probally permament now because of the announcement of the BBC Salford Quays development. I can't remember the exact reasons for the move but it was to do with the new Salford Quays stuff that was unannounced when I was there.
Just goes to show how an excelent L-N set has been ruined by poor design - The old 'natural' look and the new 'plastic' look clash greatly. I say restore the set to it's former glory - unfortunately it looks like it's too late to save it.
Spin round on this picture so you are looking at the 'window' with the Palace Hotel web cam view - you can see the shadow of someobody holding their arms in the air, presumably with the camera which took the 360 shot!!
fascinating shot though - pretend you're Gordon!!! Any other news studios got one of these??
North West Tonight and what was BBC GMR used to be based in the front of the BBC building on Oxford Road together.
GMR then got new radio studios at the back of the building in what is known as the `Belgrano` (because of its tin ship appearance) or officially as the `Medlock Buildings`.
Both NWT and GMR newsroom moved because of a technology upgrade, NWT have the newsroom upstairs and GMR downstairs. When GMR relaunched as BBC Radio Manchester, the radio newsroom moved back to the front of the Oxford Road building, but this time occupying all the space, the radio studio remain at the rear. NWT remain in the Medlock buildings until the Salford move, with the GMR offices now rented out to North West Vision.
North West Tonight have one studio, like other BBC TV centres, they no longer self opt. The black floor you can currently see is part of the studio upgrade.

Someone who knows what he's talking about - hehe.
Sounds like it.
Do they still use the front studio? It was the one they used to use for The Politics Show (with the direct view of the Oxford Rd traffic) before it switched to the NWT studio.

Very rarely. The main NWT studio is the only one that is used for regular programming at Oxford Road now.
However, NWT still do self-opt but the ability to opt is granted by Manchester CTA who control all electronic/comms resources etc for BBC Manchester. Breakfast opt-outs are not directed/vision mixed from the main control room so CTA have to give the opt facility to the smaller control room in the graphics suite and vice-versa.
