I thought that the object always on the desk was an autocue control. Gordon sometimes touches it when seemingly having difficulties with reading out the script. During the dying weeks of the old 2002-2004 set, this use to be in full view under Gordon's foot when presenting from one of the chairs.

I notice Fiona Trot didn't present any of the Christmas/New Year bulletins, who has been presenting the Breakfast summaries recently?

***EDIT - NIGEL JAY ON THE LATE BULLETIN TONIGHT**** Very Happy

As well as a foot pedal for advancing the autocue, there's probably a hand control for changing direction and skipping stories.

he does it himself at lunchtimes.. someone else does it for Northwest Tonight.. The footpedal only makes it go forward.. I believe the hand control can take it up or down quickly between each cue..

Some regions do have people dedicated to operating the autocue, others rely on the presenter pedalling for themselves. The pedal is like one you'd find on a sewing machine - the harder it's pressed the faster the script scrolls. There's often a button on the padal itself which reverses the script direction - and this can often pressed by mistake causing much amusement in the gallery and confusion with the presenter. There's usually a hand controller too (often on the desk) so that the presenter can skip between stories and go back to the top of the running order (say after a rehearsal).

The news bulletin is live but the weather, which they record in London for each region, is pre-recorded. They don't tend to change the script too much, but there is a variation between the pre half past and pre top of the hour bulletins as they are of different lengths.
