The BBC has offered a photographer £75 after they used a picture of Birmingham nicked from his Flickr stream for a CSO backdrop for a down-the-line interview on the BBC News Channel.

That is quite a nice picture (and it's difficult to make Birmingham look nice, at any time of day). I think the BBC's explanation was quite reasonable, and the offer of £75 surely acceptable if he is an amateur photographer.

Did you read the link? He asked for more and was given an, "undisclosed sum" - to his satisfaction.

£75 may have been the kind of fee that you would negotiate in advance of its use. In the circumstances where the photographer has found out after the event that his image has been used and he wasn't given the opportunity to deny them permission to use it he can more or less name his price. So long as it isn't astonomical it's quite likely that they will pay up rather than going through the hassle of being sued for it.
